Per the film’s cinematographer,Rodrigo Prieto, DiCaprio sported some hidden padding for the scene. Why? Because De Niro, well, De Niro was really hitting him! Multiple takes later (and we can only imagine the awkward tension on set), Prieto remembers thinking,
There was some padding on his butt. But you could tell De Niro was really hitting him. And I do remember doing them quite a few times and thinking, ‘Oh man, that must hurt!’
So, why the padding then? Apparently, it wasn’t to protect DiCaprio’s acting cred (though, that would be a valid point). It was all about realism – movie magic style. A completely padded behind wouldn’t have looked right on screen. But a little cinematic cushioning allowed De Niro to unleash his inner disciplinarian while keeping DiCaprio safe enough to, you know, finish the scene.
