Modern Familyfans are always delighted to discuss what they loved and disliked about the show, even after a decade. A big part of the chaos on the show was the pairing of Jay Pritchett and Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. It was a relationship that challenged so many stereotypes and also brought Manny, Gloria’s son into the mix.

He seemed like a promising character in the beginning to many, but as the show went on, his character arc disappointed many. The criticism about Manny grew as the seasons progressed, and what once felt eccentric and lovable to the viewers, now became too insufferable.
Why Manny fromModern Familyis disliked by fans
Manny, played by Rico Rodriguez, began as an old-soul child who many found endearing, he would wear ponchos, and play pan flutes, which were quirks that made him stand out. But as he grew, these quirks became glaring flaws. By the final seasons, people even began to describe him as a“screw-up” and “spoiled brat.”
A recurring critique of his character happens to be the way he acts inappropriately at times with the women around him. He also loses connections with his cultural roots and becomes more Americanized as the series goes on. This shift did not sit well with those who hoped that a natural progression for Manny would be to turn into a well-rounded adult who is culturally aware.

Despite being raised in a household where respect was emphasized and love was plenty, a lot of Manny’s actions went unchecked. So, it was a disservice to Jay and Gloria’s characters because despite them putting in their best efforts, their son did not exactly turn out to be decent (as per most fans).
HowModern Familycould’ve made Manny’s character better
In the series finale ofModern Family, we see that Manny is set to go on a year-long journey to explore the world, a trip that could perhaps lead to self-discovery. The creators aimed to give us a sense of closure with this act, but it felt like taking the easier route to escape theunresolved flaws of his character.
In all fairness, Manny’s arc needed much more nuance and genuine redemption, and they could’ve shown us at least a glimpse of the same. He began as such a promising figure, with a storyline that could’ve explored how complex it is to build a well-formed cultural identity.

Alternatively, they could’ve also shown him strengthen his relationship with Jay or Luke, so we would know that the character is maturing, at least when it comes to familial relationships. Now, whenever fans rewatch the series, they don’t remember Manny for his pan flute or ponchos, but for what could have been!
