Brendan Fraser’sJourney to the Center of the Earth(2008) is no less than a classic family adventure. While the critics may have polarizing opinions on it, you can’t disagree that it was an entertaining watch at least. A few years later,Journeyreturned to the theatres, only this time, there was no Brendan Fraser in sight, only Dwayne Johnson. Along with Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens, the group made their way to a mysterious island to carry out a rescue mission.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Islandfaced a similar fate to that of its predecessor when it came to the critics’ reviews. It made more money than Brendan Fraser’s OG film and left the fans wondering if there would be more coming from theJourneyfranchise. While the future is hazy, one thing is for certain – Dwayne Johnson will not return.
Dwayne Johnson Won’t Return for a ThirdJourney
Dwayne Johnsontook over the sequel ofJourney to the Center of the Earth, freeingBrendan Fraserfrom the lead role. Directed byBrad Peyton, the film made $335 million at thebox officeon a budget of $79 million.
A report once stated that New Line had brought in the writers ofThe Conjuringto work on two moreJourneyfilms. While Johnson was supposed to reprise his role in them, he later revealed that he won’t be playing the firefighter Hank Parsons ever again.

On X, a fan wrote to the actor stating that he really enjoyed theJourneymovies and was“wondering if there are any plans to make Journey 3 still.”Johnson, who is quite active on his social media, saw his tweet and decided to write back to the fan.
TheRed Oneactor replied that he had“no plans”to make a sequel. The third film was supposed to beJourney 3: From the Earth to the Moonbut despite the success ofJourney 2,Johnson gave up on the idea of turning it into reality.

He gave the precise reason for not wanting to make a third film. Johnson stated that the canceled sequel had turned out to be quite the creative challenge for him and his team.
Hey big man, good to see you asked dad’s permission to use his account. Unfortunately, I have no plans to make another Journey movie. My goal to make Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon” became a real challenge to crack creatively. Thx for being such a cool fan. 🤙🏾👊🏾https://t.co/9PQeCMBIAR

This conversation took place in 2018 and since then, there has been no such update about the fate ofJourney.
WillJourney 3Ever Happen?
It’s hard to say but probably not.
In 2021, the producer and president of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions,Hiram Garcia, stated that Warner Bros. was interested in a sequel toJourney 2.Not only that, but the studios were also pining for sequels toSan AndreasandRampage.

However, as far as Garcia was concerned, the idea of a sequel was not even in question. In an interview withCollider, he talked about sequels and how the production company has always valued being“calculated”in their approach.
Dwayne Johnson Defended Replacing Brendan Fraser in $766M Franchise, Said He Can “Make it better”
Talking about the studio partners wanting sequels for all these big hits, he admitted to the team wanting to move on to bigger and better things.
In his own words,
It’s a matter of our slate and the stories we want to tell. We’re very calculating in what we want to tell, but, look, if our studio partners had their ways, they want a ‘Journey 2: Mysterious Island’ sequel, they want a ‘San Andreas’ sequel, they want a ‘Rampage’ sequel. It’s like all of those movies, the studio was clamoring for a sequel, but we felt collectively, ‘Look, we told a great version of the story. Now, we want to go to tell another story somewhere else.’
There you go. This combined with Johnson’s statement from 2018 makes the future ofJourneylook dark. But worry not Johnson fans as the actor has some interesting projects lined up for him including thelive-actionMoanaand the biographical film,The Smashing Machine.Stay tuned!
Journey to the Center of the EarthandJourney 2: The Mysterious Islandare available to rent/buy on Prime Video.
