Square Enix officially revealed new details forFinal Fantasy 7 Remake IntergradeonPS5, most notably announcing Yumi Kakazu as the Japanese voice actor forYuffie Kisaragi. This isn’t a surprise forFF7fans for several reasons. But first, it’s important to quickly explain the seiyuu industry in Japan.Seiyuu - Japanese voice actresses and actors - are rarely ever replaced in Japan. If a seiyuu voiced a certain character in an anime or game, they will be called back to voice the character again in a new work. Even if years have passed. Unless they’re sick, sadly passed away, orcommitted some sort of crime, the seiyuu’s agency will be contacted and the seiyuu will reprise the role.Needless to say, the originalFinal Fantasy VIIwas not voiced. However, fromEhrgeiztoKingdom Hearts, several games included voices for theFF7cast, and the seiyuu have stuck with them since.Cloudis voiced byTakahiro Sakuraiever since the firstKHgame in 2002.

Since the middle of the 90s, it also became common for seiyuu to simultaneously pursue a musical career, some of them reaching status similar to jpop idols. And what brought forth the current idol seiyuu system. I could tell you more, but basically, all of this established the seiyuu as an important part of the characters for fans. And Japanese companies like Square Enix obviously know that.

While the seiyuu industry isn’t free of issues, this is definitely a plus compared to other countries, when voice actresses and actors aren’t given as much importance. I could tell tell you a lot about the French dubbing industry.

After Square Enix revealed Yuffie’s profile, Yumi Kakazu also shared some comments on Twitter. We translated them below.

Yumi Kakazu:“My role got announced~ I’ve been voicing her for a long time, sinceEhrgeizin 1998. Please be nice to her”.

Anyways, this is why mostFF7fans could tell who would voice Yuffie inFinal Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. There was no way Yumi Kakazu would be replaced. Sadly, Square Enix did not announce yet who the English voice actor of Yuffie is.

Yumi Kakazu also voices Ethlyn inFire Emblem Heroes(hoping Nintendo makes aFE4remake), Kula Diamond inKOF, Seolla inSuper Robot Wars, among other roles.
