One can understand how a long-running series could become stale. There is a lot of inertia in one direction that can be challenging to reverse as gameplay conventions, lore bloats, and deviation from what fans expect to become more ingrained and riskier. Something likeFallout Londoncan excel in that situation.

The mod team behind this massive (and totally free)Fallout 4conversion, FOLON, approached the project with new ideas and perspectives without worrying about offendingFalloutfans. But this mod’s enormous success didn’t happen overnight.

There Was an Enormous Obstacle in front of Team FOLON While MakingFallout London

Businesses must have a clear idea of what they are getting into and be certain they want to do it before they can commit to something as big asFallout London.

It took a lot of adjusting and learning to get there, but Team FOLON now knows more than any other group on the planet what it takes to complete a project this large and impressive while working as amateurs. This is because they have developed a massive mod.

“Damn Fallout London looks great”: Atomfall Is Being Compared To the Recent Fallout 4 Mod Thanks To Its Latest Gamescom 2024 Trailer

Talking about the hurdles Team FOLON had to overcome while making this highly ambitious project, this is what the project manager of the mod, Dean Carter, had to say (viaVG247):

Content creep kills projects, that’s just a known fact. We definitely – because obviously the project was started during the pandemic – we had two years to just throw things at the wall and see what stuck and it got out of control, but we then conquered that Everest,

According to Carter, the team said,“Okay, by this point we’re now a bit more grounded,”after the developers reached the top of the peak and were somewhat worn out from all the other ideas they had contributed.

By placing it on the other side of the Atlantic, a location that the America-focusedFalloutuniverse has never formally visited, the story is released from the weight of the majority of the series’ decades-long lore.

Although a fan-madeFalloutlacks the polish and usability we would expect from a major developer, Bethesda RPG fans areused to putting up with a few glitchesas part of the cost of accessing these worlds, andFallout Londonis essentially a brand-new, entertaining game that moves the series to a cool new setting.

There Was No Place forBaldur’s Gate 3Famed Neil Newbon inFallout LondonAt the Beginning

After contacting theFallout Londonteam to offer his volunteer services, Neil Newbon ofBaldur’s Gate 3didn’t hear back for nearly 18 months. In an interview withGinxTV, Newbon disclosed this information, stating that he was instantly drawn to the project.

Unfortunately, Newbon hadn’t yet achieved widespread recognition for his role as Astarion fromBaldur’s Gate 3, which launched him into voice actor superstardom. So, even though someone on the team had initially seen his message, they were unaware of his identity and chose not to reply. Newbon stated in that interview:

“It’s a DLC, but it’s not really a DLC”: Fallout London to be Wildly Different Than Every Other Bethesda Game

I just heard about it: Astarion and Baldur’s Gate 3 had just kicked off in a wonderful way. I’d heard about Fallout: London for a while and I’d already sent them a message like a year before. Maybe two years – it was a long time ago, saying ”Hey, this sounds great, I want to be involved.”

Newbon’s portrayal of the vampiric Elf undoubtedly made him a household name in the gaming industry, even though he had voice-acting roles prior to Astarion, such as Karl Heisenberg inResident Evil Village. When Team FOLON realized the actor was interested, they were able to create Barry the Boat for him.

“It’s a DLC, but it’s not really a DLC”: Fallout London to be Wildly Different Than Every Other Bethesda Game

As he fights against the idea that he must always be a mindless boat, Barry the Boat—a literal robotic boat—went through existentialist phases. In the interview, Newbon stated that he enjoyedFallout London‘s volunteer aspect and that it was novel to work on a project for artistic rather than financial reasons.

Fallout Londonis incredibly impressive, especially when you take into account that it is a completely free mod rather than an official game. It’s a huge role-playing game that deserves theFalloutname, and it does a fantastic job of breaking up the US-centric formula of the series with its titular city in a fresh and innovative way.
