Modern Familyis one of the most beloved modern sitcoms, lasting eleven seasons. The series, centered on a multicultural family, became a major hit in the 2010s and remains popular today, primarily because of the cast’s performances. However, the series almost did not materialize in its current form because of one obstacle the creators felt would be hard to overcome.

According to creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, they contemplated turning the sitcom into an animated show. The creators admitted that they were concerned about one aspect that was hard to nail until they made a breakthrough and never looked back. Here is everything you need to know about arguably the biggest obstacles in the creation ofModern Family.
Modern Familycreators contemplated making it an animated show for one reason
Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan,Modern Familypremiered in 2009 and introduced viewers to the Pritchett-Dunphy family. The sitcom follows the day-to-day lives of the modern-day extended family with intermingling cultures and values.
During an interview withThe Guardian, the creators spoke about crafting the perfect modern-day family viewers would fall in love with. However, the biggest challenge they faced according to Levitan wascasting the child actors, which made the duo nervous.

At one point I said: Argh – maybe we should make this an animated show! But we started seeing them and were blown away by the quality of the choices we had. We struck gold.
Levitan made the above statement, admitting the duo was extremely concerned about the challenge of casting the child actors.

The family’s children played bySarah Hyland,Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Jeremy Maguire, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, each have a distinct personality and form a large part of its comedy. Therefore, casting the child actors was very important for the series.

Levitan added that once they started the casting, the team quickly realized there were many talented young actors to choose from. As a result, they dropped the idea of making the sitcom animated. Moreover, by the time they finished filming the pilot, the duo was convinced they had gathered the best cast.
Modern Familycreators revealed the secret sauce to the show’s success
In the same interview, co-creator Christopher Lloyd shed light on the show’s creation, explaining that the basic concept was derived from the conversations he and Levitan had daily. As a result, the concept of a modern multicultural family was born.
However, Lloyd revealed that like most other sitcoms, they wanted to offer something deeper on an emotional level than just simple comedic gags. He stated:

There was lots of snarkiness and cynicism but nothing uplifting, nothing good for the soul. No protein!
From Lloyd’s comments, it is evident the creators wanted to make something more than just a comedy, giving equal weightage to the dramatic and emotional moments.
