The countdown toCall of Duty: Black Ops 6‘s official release has begun, and fans are eagerly awaiting the chance to dive headfirst into Treyarch’s latest offering after the four-year hiatus. With a staggering 16 maps available at launch, it’s clear that the developers are pulling out all the stops to deliver an unforgettable (and less repetitive) multiplayer experience.

But amidst the usual collection of military bases, urban warzones, and exotic locales, one map looks to stand out as a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Enter “Rewind,” a 1991-themed map set in a strip mall complete with a video store packed with VHS tapes. Yes, you read that right—VHS tapes.
A “Blast” from the Past
In a recent interview withGamesBeat, Miles Leslie, Associate Creative Director at Treyarch, shed some light on the inspiration behind Rewind and its unique video store setting:
Rewind is in a strip mall. It has a video store. A lot of players don’t even know what VHS is, but you may run in the video store and shoot up the VHS tapes. They’ll go flying. We have some cool physics. We wanted to lean into all that stuff.

While the idea of shooting up a video store might seem a bit odd at first glance, it all seems to be part ofTreyarch‘s plan to immerse players in the game’s 1991 setting.
Treyarch’s Misstep Allows Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Players To Borrow A Mechanic Straight From Steam’s Biggest Multiplayer Title
For younger players who have never experienced the joy (or frustration) of rewinding a VHS tape, Rewind offers a chance to step back in time and wreak havoc in a way that onlyBlack Opscan deliver.
But don’t worry—shooting VHS tapes isn’t the only thing you’ll be doing in Rewind. As Leslie puts it:

Our design principles have evolved over the years. Our classic three lanes, players respond really well to that. We’re coming in swinging with all of the maps.
So, the classic three-lane layout thatCall of Dutyfans know and love is still present, ensuring that the core gameplay remains as tight and addictive as ever. It’s just that now, you can do it all while surrounded by the sights and sounds of a bygone era.

Black Ops 6: A Mix of Both Old and New
Of course, Rewind is just one of the 16 maps that will be available at launch inBlack Ops 6. Players can expect to globe-trot across a variety of locations, many of which will be familiar to those who have played through the game’s campaign.

But whatabout classic maps from previousBlack Opstitles? Will we see any remakes or remasters? While Treyarch’s focus forBlack Ops 6was on delivering original content, Leslie hinted that there may be some surprises in store post-launch:
Our goal was to deliver original maps on day one with Black Ops 6. We know that fans always want those fan favorites too. We want to bring them as well, especially looking the best they ever have.

We have some surprises post-launch, a good mix of original maps and some cool reimaginings and remasters as well that fans will be excited about.
WithBlack Ops 6set to launch on October 25th, fans won’t have to wait much longer to experience everything the game has to offer. And with the title coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, even more players will have the chance to jump inand start shooting up those VHS tapes.
