FRIENDSdelivered some of the most memorable and endearing relationships for ten seasons. From Ross and Rachel’s rollercoaster ride to Monica and Chandler’s unexpected romance, the viewers had two love stories to root for. But Joey and Phoebe never crossed the line of platonic friendship, despite the undeniable chemistry.
If you think about it, they had similar personalities, with Phoebe being kind-hearted and whimsical, and Joey, good-natured yet dim-witted. Many fans rooted for the duo to be together but it sadly never happened, and here’s why!
Why Joey and Phoebe fromFRIENDSnever became a couple
In an interview withMetro, co-creator David Crane spoke about why they made the intentional choice to keep the two from getting into something romantic inFRIENDS. Basically, it would have been too predictable if they formed a pair of every character, and he elaborated on the same, by saying:
It all would have been too tidy and too complete. When your goal is to keep the six characters in stories together, it would be really easy to go down that road, but I think we all felt it would be a mistake.
He further elaborated how they carefully structured the two major relationships, so the challenges faced by both couples don’t seem similar and redundant.Ross and Rachel had a dramatic arcwhile Monica and Chandler were more stable. While Joey and Phoebe share a playful and eccentric energy, the writers felt it would be better to preserve their friendship and allow them to shine as individuals.
The on and off-screen chemistry between Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow fromFRIENDS
Even though the writers were not on board with the idea,Matt LeBlancrevealed in an interview withPeoplethat they had suggested an alternative storyline for Phoebe and Joey. Their input wasn’t accepted but it was still an entertaining thought.
We actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah
Lisa Kudrowand LeBlanc shared a close friendship off-screen, and it was full of them indulging in lighthearted jokes and teasing. LeBlanc even recalled that Kudrow was ticklish, and the duo spoke about how he would make the actress laugh despite her threatening him.

So even though the writers had the show’s best interest in mind, they might have fumbled the opportunity to create the best on-screen pair with a natural chemistry that could have outshined everyone on the show. But perhaps they sent a strong message by keeping their friendship intact and proving that a platonic connection is just as beautiful and meaningful as a romantic one.
