I’ll admit thata lot of the assumptions and guessesI had aboutGotham Knightslast year turned out wrong. I thought the game would be based on Scott Snyder’s run ofBatmancomics, specifically its Court of Owls arc. WhileGotham Knightsdoes involve the old Court, it also has co-op, multiple characters, and apparently shared progression. A new interview conducted bythe folks at GamesRadarrevealed some of what players can expect whenGotham Knightseventually drops.
WhileGotham Knightsis being developed by a company with Batman-heavy roots, it won’t play like previous titles. WB Montreal is the studio behind 2013’sBatman: Arkham OriginsandGotham Knightswill take some inspiration from that game and franchise. However, for the most part, the upcoming game will reinvent or reimagine the systems that made theArkhamseries work. Fleur Marty, the game’s executive producer said “We have entirely redesigned the combat system in order for it to work well in co-op. Of course, we’re still a brawler, and some of the mechanics won’t feel totally alien for people who played and enjoyed theArkhamseries, but it is in many ways very different.” It’s not entirely clear howGotham Knightswill change up its formula to fit co-op, but according to Marty, it will retain the fluidity and freedom theArkhamgames are known for.
Likewise, the story being told inGotham Knightswill be wholly original as well. While it does feature some established entities fromBatmansource material, it’s using these to craft something new. Luckily, as players go through the game’s story and enemies get tougher, they won’t have to worry about leveling up each character. The game will feature a robust cast of characters, each with their own weapons, costumes, and abilities that can be tinkered with. However, regardless of which the player takes out on a mission, the others are still active in some way. At least, that’s the justification that Marty has for unplayed heroes continuing to level up.
Gotham Knightsdoesn’t have a release date just yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as it does. So far, all WB Montreal has revealed is that the game will come out this year.
