Brie Larson’s introduction scene inAvengers: Endgameshowed her as an all-powerful superhero who saved Tony Stark from space. After the battle with Thanos, only Tony and Nebula are left aboard the Benatar, with quickly depleting resources. Captain Marvel arrives at a time when Tony is almost sure that he will be dead in space and leaves an emotional message for Pepper Potts.

Tony is saved and brought back to the Avengers compound, but DC fans who saw this scene were not too thrilled. Brie Larson saving Tony Stark from a stranded ship in space was too similar to a DC animated film scene, where Superman rescues Batman from space.

Is Brie Larson’sAvengers: EndgameScene A Copy Of A DC Animated Movie Scene?

DC fans accused the Russo brothers of stealing a DC animated film scene to recreateBrie Larson‘s introduction scene inAvengers: Endgame. Fans claimed that Carol Danvers saving Tony Stark scene was inspired by the 2009 film,Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

In this film, Batman tries to sacrifice himself during the climax and flies a rocket into a meteor. During the crash, he leaves the rocket in an escape pod but is left stranded in space. Batman is nearly unconscious when Superman arrives to save him and carries the ship back to Earth. Some DC fans made a side-by-side analysis of this scene with that of Larson’sAvengers: Endgamescene.

Marvel and DC Comics are often inspired by each other. There are numerous instances where Marvel has drawn inspiration from Superman and other DC characters, just asDC has similarly taken cues from Marvel’s creations. The similarities between characters like Namor & Aquaman, Hawkeye & Green Arrow, Darkseid & Thanos, and others are too obvious to ignore.

The scene in question cannot be called a blatant Marvel copy of DC. The DC animated film was based on theSuperman/Batmancomic series, created by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. Interestingly, Loeb went on to work for Marvel Television for a long time from 2010 to 2019. With creative minds working simultaneously on both Marvel & DC, such similarities are bound to happen.

It was also one of the few instances of“copying”that DC fans found inAvengers: Endgame. DC fan,@theSNYDERVERSE, once called out the Russo brothers for copying Hawkeye’s Ronin scenes in the movie from 2016’sSuicide Squad.

Captain Marvel’sAvengers: EndgameScene Was Supposed To Be Different

Things almost took a different turn at the editing table when it came to Brie Larson’sAvengers: Endgameintroduction. Anthony and Joe Russo had a different plan on how to present this scene, which they eventually decided to drop. The directors and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they almost planned to hide Captain Marvel’s identity when she arrived at the Benatar.

McFeely shared on the audio commentary track of the film’s home release,“The idea would be that there’d be orange light on Tony’s face, he’d see something, the audience wouldn’t see it”(via Looper). However, they realized that it wouldn’t work in the way they wanted, with Joe Russo commenting,“We felt like it was not a successful reveal.”

Looking back, it would’ve been pointless to create such a mystery around the character. In the film, when the character appears to save Tony Stark, she represents hope, not just for Tony but for the entire Avengers team.
