While it’s no secret that Sony is developing an Until Dawn movie, we haven’t seen anything about it or heard what it will be about, except theconfirmationthat it will be its own standalone story, detached from the game’s plot.
That changes today, as Sony Pictures has released our first look at the Until Dawn movie. This isn’t a full-fledged trailer, as the footage is only a few seconds long.

The Until Dawn Movie’s Vibe Seems To Fit The Game
Aside from the first look, the film’s synopsis confirms that its story is detached from anything in the game. It reads, “One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again - only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”
The film uses the game’s Butterfly Effect mechanic to give a different outcome for each character. Of course, unlike the game, we can’t decide who dies in the movie. That respawn thing mentioned adds to the movie’s video game feeling.

The Until Dawn movie will be directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Shazam), who got his big break thanks to a YouTube horror short film that caught the attention of horror auteur James Wan (Insidious, The Conjuring).
The film’s cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare – the only actual Until Dawn character returning from the game’s cast to the film. Stormare will portray the same character, Dr. Alan J. Hill, as he did in the game.
There’s no official release date yet, but we will be getting a full trailer “soon” according to Sony. I’m hoping we’ll get a release date when the full trailer is released since the movie is slated to hit theaters sometime this year.
