James Cameron’sTitanichas the power to reduce all of us to tears as we watch the tragic love story of Jack and Rose, but nothing brings more pain to the viewers than seeing the precious Heart of the Ocean necklace sink into the depths of the sea.
Like many successful movie projects,Titanichas an alternate ending that would witness the main protagonist in a different light. Endings are always tricky and could make or break a story no matter how good the beginning and middle parts were, and this one deleted ending scene might have affected the audience’s response to the film.
Titanic’s Alternate Ending Sheds a Different Perspective on Rose
InJames Cameron’sTitanic, Rose appears as an old woman joining the voyage of the explorer Brock Lovett as he goes on a mission to recover the Heart of the Ocean necklace from the ship’s wreckage.
In thetheatrical endingthat we saw, Rose wraps up herTitanicstory and makes her way to the edge of the boat to drop the necklace, which has been in her possession all the time, into the ocean. She lets out a small gasp as the jewel slips from her hand.

Thealternate endingis quite different from this and many felt relieved that Cameron opted to keep this scene in the editing room because it surely would not work. The other version would see Lovett and Lizzy Calvert stop Rose from jumping off the ship. Of course, this wasn’t the case.
She was still going to drop the necklace, but Lovett would ask her to let him have a feel of it for once. As she threw the jewel into the water, Lovett would make a strange laugh and another guy who witnessed the whole fiasco would exclaim, “That really sucks, lady!”
While this ending isn’t really ideal, it has more explanation as to why Rose had to throw away the necklace. Many fans hated how she chose to discard a very precious pendant instead of giving it to her family and making better use of it to help other people in financial need.

“You will look for treasure in the wrong place, Mr. Lovett. Only life is priceless, and making each day count,” she would say in the alternate ending. This shifts the focus from people’s obsession with material things to putting more value in life’s precious moments.

Cameron said in an interview viaOmid Filmsthat a lot of people also asked him why he made Rose throw away the necklace. He explained the details behind the infamous alternate ending and concluded:
I think it’s very clear what it all means, at kind of a literary level… She’s saying that actual material wealth isn’t the important thing. If you don’t get that, you don’t understand the whole movie.
This is the simple reason why Rose needed to let go of the gemstone. Many fans saw it as a selfish move, but all the filmmaker wanted to convey was that life is more precious than any expensive jewelry.
