Short Strategy Games

Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock

Out of all the free games in the Slitherine Publisher Sale, Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock is my favorite. This game puts you in the shoes of a fleet commander during the early years of theFirst Cyclon War, decades before the events of the TV series.

If you enjoyed Warhammer 40k’s Battlefleet Gothic Armada, you’re going to feel right at home with this game, its ship building, and its focus on 3D battles. This isn’t your typical flat space battlefield because there’s an element of elevation in this game, just like how you would command a ship in space.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock Carrier Ship

The DLCs available for Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock are currently at half price, so if you’ve decided that you like the game, you can get those DLC bundles as well, although I recommend getting at least the Season 2 bundle since it has more content and new ships available.

Field of Glory II: Medieval

Field of Glory II: Medieval is a tacticalturn-based gameset in a turbulent time in Europe during the 12th century, featuring armies and famous battles across the medieval world, including the Mongol invasion of Eastern Europe. I know, it’s not exactly the best time period to live.

This game is pure tactical battle only, so you won’t have to worry about getting resources or feeding your population. Also, thearmies featured in the campaign are based on real history, but you’re able to always customize and create a custom battle if you want to see how armies in each era can fare against each other. For example, pitting the Mongol army (1230-1353 AD) against the Crusaders (1155-1291 AD).

Fantasy General II

Rounding out the free trio is Fantasy General II. It’s a turn-based strategy game aboutVikings mixed with a little bit of Norse mythology. You are the son and heir of the respected Falir-One Eye, ready to prove yourself by uniting your clan’s warband against the encroaching shadowy Empire.

Combat takes place on hex-based battlefields similar to Civ games or Warhammer 40k Gladius, minus all the base building and production. As you guide your army towards the map, you’re going to encounter some obstacles and sidequests along the way, which you’re going to solve in a decision-based, narrative text style.

Fantasy General II Empire Army

Out of all the free games in the publisher sale, Fantasy General is the easiest to pick up and learn, but it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a great fantasy strategy game, such as a fully voiced narrative campaign or a fully fleshed-out story like theSpellforce series. That said, all DLCs are half off, so if you want this game, I suggest getting the bundle or at least the Empire Aflame DLC since it puts you on the other side of the coin, the Empire, and has its own dedicated campaign.

To claim all three games, simply head to Steam and look for the Slitherine 25th Anniversary banner, or search for these games individually. If you love RTS and strategy games, it’s your chance to take advantage of the massive discounts on other titlessuch as Starship Troopers: Terran Command, Warhammer 40k: Battlesector, Headquarters World War II, and Terminator Dark Fate - Defiance.
