‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ they say, but apparently, no one told that to the myriad of actors who have slipped into the Bat-suit over the years. From Adam West to George Clooney and Ben Affleck, Batman has been reimagined more times than you’re able to count. Enter Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’The Batman—a Gotham-bound adventure where our hero is so brooding and introspective, you might expect him to ask,“Why so serious?”

Matt Reeves has confirmed that The Batman was always intended to be the start of a grand trilogy.

With fans gnawing their fingernails over the fate of the sequel, concern mounted following James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reshuffling of the DC Universe. But not to fret, as Reeves recently spilled the beans, assuring us that the sequel is not only in the works but is simmering away nicely. The director also confirmed that while the DC Universe might be undergoing some serious recalibration,The Batmansaga is sticking to its guns—more or less.

The Exciting Road Ahead for Batman Fans with Matt Reeves’ Grand Plan

In a recent chinwag withCollider,Matt Reevestook us on a deep dive into his master plan forThe Batmanand its follow-ups, proving that while Gotham might be in turmoil, his vision is as steady as a bat in a belfry.

“I’m going to lose my f—king mind”: Matt Reeves’ Plans for The Batman Franchise Must Nudge James Gunn to Do the One Thing That Fans Have Been Waiting for Decades

When Bruce Wayne first appeared inThe Batman, it wasn’t just a one-off adventure; Reeves had a bigger plan all along. The director, 57, confirmed that the film was merely a stepping stone in a grand trilogy that’s still very much on the table.“Yes, that is still the plan,” he admitted, leaving no room for doubt.

I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.

But here’s the kicker: while the grand plan remains intact, Reeves has had to make a few adjustments along the way. ThesuccessofThe Batmanset the stage for some creative recalibrations, including the spin-off seriesThe Penguin. The director elaborated:

Things kind of shifted. So, when we came up with the idea to do The Penguin, that was something where I had always intended to continue Penguin’s story and wanted to tell this story of his beginning of rise to power.

Despite some creative tweaks, including The Penguin spin-off, Reeves assures these changes enhance the story without altering the trilogy’s course.

As for how the Penguin’s story fits into the larger scheme, Reeves stated:

I wanted the origin stories of these other characters, of the Rogues Gallery and that story was originally going to be the entrée into the next movie.

Reeves is dedicated to keeping Bruce Wayne as the emotional heart of the story.

This allows us to see Penguin’s rise in more detail without hitting the brakes on the main trilogy.

Yet, the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Studios regime threw a spanner in the works. With Henry Cavill’s Superman crashing and burning, the future of Reeves’The Batmanfranchise seemed unconvinced.

But last year, in a sit-down withCollider, Reeves assured fans that the franchise will continue to move forward, despite any challenges or changes in the broader DC universe:

We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan. And then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all of that.

While the exact details remain under wraps, theCloverfielddirector has a clear vision for the future, as he elaborated in another conversation withCollider:

My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story.

So, Reeves is determined to keep Batman the star of his show, ensuring that he’s not relegated to the shadows behind a parade of villains.

The Batman 2is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2025.
