In the past, channels were the main competition, but now it’s all about streaming services. It’s no surprise that they need to constantly update and adapt to their audience because the competition keeps getting tougher. There’s always research being done on this, and recently, Apple TV+ has been in the spotlight.

The news might not be a shock, but it definitely affects the whole lineup, which is currently top-notch. Several series on the platform have already been nominated for Emmys and even won, so what’s next for them?

Apple TV+ Is Getting Fewer Viewers Than Netflix

Netflix has always been the biggest player in streaming since it launched, making it easier to find someone who doesn’t have other streaming services than to find one who doesn’t have Netflix. But as time goes on and new options keep popping up, the competition for viewers has gotten really intense.

Right now, Apple TV+ is definitely one of the top services for TV shows, especially given the quality of its content. However, even with this strength, it’s not a major game-changer overall. While some viewers might prioritize quality over quantity, most people find that having a diverse range of programming is key.

According toBloomberg, Apple TV+ has fewer viewers in a month than Netflix gets in just 24 hours. Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Geetha Ranganathan and Kevin Near commented on the case:

What’s Apple TV+ Up To Next?

Since its launch in 2019, the service has tightly managed its budgets and renewals, quickly canceling productions that don’t deliver returns. Instead of licensing established content, Apple has focused on investing in new original productions to build a strong programming base.

Although streaming services have earned praise for their original content, they still struggle to grow their audience. In a recent analysis of eight streaming services in the US, Apple TV+ ranks relatively low, just ahead of Paramount+ in weekly viewership. The top three spots are still dominated by Netflix, Disney, and Max, which lead in terms of views.

Netflix has commented on the situation:

The challenge for so many of our competitors is that while they are investing heavily in premium content, it’s generating relatively small viewing on their streaming services.

It’s truly a double-edged sword. Ideally, focusing on the content being distributed would be the way to go. While some argue this is the best approach, research suggests otherwise. A prime example is Netflix’s strategy of investing in international productions — the large volume of content seems to have paid off.

Pretty much everything I’ve watched on Apple TV has actually been really goodThey seemed to focus on quality over quantity which is the opposite of some other services

So what are the plans for Apple’s current productions? To become more sustainable, the company is aiming to pay less upfront for programs, be quicker in canceling productions that aren’t performing well, and require third-party studios to cover any extra costs. Licensing content from competitors is another strategy being considered to avoid relying solely on original productions.

They’re also becoming more selective with their acquisitions, resulting in fewer projects being ordered directly to series. For instance,Foundationhas been postponed, with script changes requested to manage extra costs from delays. Discussions are also underway about future seasons ofSeverance.

To sum up, plans are being reviewed, and Apple TV+ might see an increase in viewership in the future. The only problem is that it’s still unclear exactly how this will affect not only current productions but also upcoming ones. There’s not much to do but take the risk.
