In a surprising reveal during the Xbox Games Showcase, fans got a glimpse ofGears of War E-Day, which will tell the story of the infamous Emergence Day through the eyes of Marcus Fenix. Joining him in the battle against the Locust invasion is his best friend, Dom Santiago.
Fans were hoping that they’d get to see the sixth mainline installment in the series, but Xbox Game Studios decided to go with the prequel. Nevertheless, it’s always fun to dig deeper into origin stories, especially if they’re about captivating characters like Marcus Fenix.
That’s The Bond That Grew Stronger Than Anything in The Series
Everything we’ve witnessed in the popular shooter video game has its roots going back to this one moment called Emergence Day. As the game’s creative director, Matt Searcy, puts it, “It’s the heart of the Gears universe“.

And it’s not just this, but the bond that was developed between the protagonists, Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, during this harsh time. Searcy revealed in a recentinterviewthat both characters are different from the ones players saw duringGears 1to3.
They don’t have 10 years of fighting the Locust between them. When the game opens, there’s supposed to be peace on Sera, and they’re trying to figure out life without this person they both loved.
TheGears of War E-Daytrailer sees Marcus Fenix engaged in a fight against a Locust. Just when he finishes off the threat, the place is broken down in rumble and the beloved hero is hanging by a pipe. And as he’s about to fall, Dom saves him from going down, just in time, and gives him his bandana.
Gears of Wars E-Day is Just the Beginning of What’s to Come
While fans are obviously excited about the origins of Marcus Fenix,Dom’s story inGears of War E-Daywill be just as pivotal to the narrative. He became friends with Marcus through his brother Carlos; however, their bond wasn’t that strong at the time. As the story advances, there was this instance where Dom freed Marcus from Jacinto Maximum Security Prison.

With the involvement of Unreal Engine 5, we can all expectthe origin story to be loaded with immense attention to detail. That’ll give the players an experience of lifetime. While it may appear like spin-off to the series, it is not. It’s a part of mainline series set in the earlier timeline.
And this is just the beginning, as more stories are to come in future. Exploring Fenix and Santiago’s origins makes sense, as it kind of begins the saga as we’ve witnessed throughout the years. There’s no official release date for the game but we should not expect Emergence Day to arrive in a year or two.
