Black Cloveris one of the modern phenomena of shonen, with an incredibly elaborate world and particularly likable characters. Having had quite an exciting run of 170 episodes, the show was on hold because of some production issues. However, in 2023, Netflix released its long-awaited movieBlack Clover: Sword of the Wizard Kingto be a new chapter in the franchise.
But, to everyone’s surprise, the movie’s initial setup was not to be the world of the Clover Kingdom! So now fans might be wondering about what could be the original plan as the setting of the movie and why exactly it diverted from that.
The Initial Proposal Was To Set The Movie In The Land of Sun, Yami’s Home!
In an insightfulinterview, it was revealed by the creator, Yuki Tabata himself, that the film didn’t initially pitch the setting to be the Clover Kingdom but it was the homeland of Yami, The Land of Sun. This would have been an excellent opportunity to give much more knowledge about Yami’s past and possibly about the culture in his homeland, too. However, Tabata and the team have decided to display this aspect in the first original series.
At first, there was a proposal to set the film in the Land of Sun, Yami’s home but we decided to show that in the original.
Tabata-san said that a more ‘vibrant and interesting’ concept, perfectly fitting for an ‘anime film’, was selected for the movie. And it precisely was the Clover Kingdom.
And decided on the most flamboyant and attractive idea for an ‘anime film’.
This bold creative choice resulted in the current movie setting, making it an even more enjoyable ride. By choosing a more showy and catching concept, the team aimed to make this work stand out among the episodes and leave an unforgettable mark on its audience. This stretched the universe ofBlack Cloverinto many needed, unexpected, and really exciting dimensions.

The filmBlack Clover: Sword of the Wizard Kingdominated Netflix, amassing 6.4 million views from June 16-18. In fact, the film ranked second among the most-watched non-English films on the site for that week. (Source:Netflix)
The movie received great critical acclaim, with an 86% critic rating onRotten Tomatoes. Such exemplary reception was further cemented with the nomination for Best Film in the8th Crunchyroll Anime Awardsin 2024, proving that the movie was indeed something special.
