James Wan is finally set to return to his horror roots with his upcoming movie, which will be the remake of 1954’sCreature from the Black Lagoon, often seen as one of Universal’s last great monster flicks. The creator of the Conjuring series, who previously helmed DCEU’sAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is set to take a more grounded approach with the remake.

Moreover, it appears the director might bring back concepts from his scrapped DCEU feature, which was set to hit the theatres before the brand’s swansong.
The Remake Might Bring Back Ideas From James Wan’s Scrapped DCEU Film
Originally,James Wanwas set to helm anAquamanspin-off, titledThe Trench, which was slated for a 2019 release. While much is not known about the film,The Conjuringfilmmaker later revealed it was supposed to be a Black Manta film. But as the story goes, like many planned releases under the Walter Hamana regime, it was eventually scrapped.
However, the concepts for this scrapped release might make their way to Wan’s upcoming release, the remake ofCreature From the Black Lagoon. Wans once revealed that if he comes up with an idea, it never completely goes to the sandbox, as he does end up using it in some way or form.

That’s my problem, is I come up with a lot of ideas and I have so many ideas just percolating, but obviously, I can’t use all of them. So I would say of all the different thoughts and ideas I’ve come up with, I end up using maybe 20-30% of them in my work, and so I do have a drawer full of ideas that could develop into something else.
Considering this will be the director’s first major release since theAquamansequel, we might end upseeing his unused ideas from the scrapped DCEU release.

Creature From the Black LagoonRemake Will Respect Its Roots
Set to release under his own production banner Atomic House, which is merging with Blumhouse, according toThe Hollywood Reporter, this remake will lean into visceral horror. But despite going for a more grounded and modernized retelling, the remake will respect its roots, and thanks to the director’s expertise in the genre, fans can’t think of a better fit for the film.
