Desert Planet. Sandworms. An Orphan Chosen One. An Order of Magicians vying for political control. An oppressive Emperor. Secret Lineages that intermingle the protagonist and the antagonists. Is itStar Wars, orDune?

Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope

While George Lucas has never admitted anything aboutStar Warsbeing taken fromDune, the film definitely has a lot in common with the novel that came before it. While Lucas has largely ignored these comparisons, Frank Herbert is a little more sure that the legendary director might have taken inspiration from his seminal science fiction novel.

Frank Herbert believes that there is at least a slim chance thatStar Warshas some ofDune‘s DNA

WhileGeorge Lucashas never mentioned whetherDunehas influenced even a little bit ofStar Wars,Frank Herbertis not so sure if the two IPs can be as divorced after all. Speaking at UCLA in 1985 (viaPolygon), the author expressed his doubts about the relationship betweenDuneandStar Wars, saying:

Lucas has never admitted that they copied a lot of Dune, and I’m not saying they did. I’m just saying there are 16 points of identity between the book Dune and Star Wars. Now you’ve had stat — what is it? It’s 16 times 16 times 16 times… over 1, the odds against that being coincidence? There aren’t that many stars in the universe.

Timothée Chalamet in Dune 2

DuneandStar Warsdefinitely have a lot in common, and both IPs have been immensely influential as space operas in their own right. George Lucas’Star Warsdoes have some glaring similarities withDune, but without any official comments, it is difficult to make any definitive statements, regardless of how clear the similarities might be.

Frank Herbert believed that George Lucas at least owed him dinner

A running joke in the fandoms for both franchises, which was started by Herbert, was that if nothing else, George Lucas owes Frank Herbert dinner for all the similarities that exist in Star Wars when compared toDune. While the two stories are very different from each other, the most glaring of them being the use of droids and thinking machines inStar Wars, other aspects of the film seem to be ripped right from the novel written by Frank Herbert.

Idea For Ridley Scott’s $184 Million Epic Was Ironically Born Out of a Failed Attempt to Adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune For the Big Screen

WhileStar Warsis low on political intrigue, the structure of its Empire is vastly different when compared toDune, there is a section of the fandom that believes thatStar Warscould very well be described asDuneby way of Akira Kurosawa, given that the franchise as a whole draws from samurai films (as indicated by the design of the helmets of the Rebel troops and Darth Vader’s helmet).
