Be itDuneorArrival, Denis Villeneuve has been very sophisticated when he presents stories about space and aliens. So it makes sense that a film like2001: A Space Odysseyleft a big and lasting impression on the director. An interview during the BAFTA Awards revealed what exactly about the film got to him, and how it has influenced him when it comes to films in general.

2001: A Space Odysseyis one of the few films that have come to define an era in science fiction cinema, like some other offerings from Hollywood likeAlienandPredator.2001: A Space Odysseyis a film that has been infinitely praised for the work that Stanley Kubrick did on it, often ending up on lists of some of the most influential directors of our time.
Denis Villeneuve remembers the ‘trauma’ of the opening sequence of2001: A Space Odyssey
Denis Villeneuvetalked about the impact that2001: A Space Odysseyhad on him, with his earliest memory of seeing the film being that he saw it past bedtime when he was younger. He said:
One of the first films I’ve seen at a young age that I should not have seen is probably, the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey. In a way it was one of the best gifts I ever had, because the trauma of seeing the opening sequence with the ape, still today gives me shivers.

2001: A Space Odysseyhas one of the most iconic openings in modern cinema, most recently parodied byGreta Gerwig‘sBarbie. The soundtrack that plays with the opening, the opening section ofAlso Sprach Zarathustra, namedSunrise, was popularized with the film, and made an appearance in a slew of shows and films following the film’s release, such as the aforementionedBarbieand shows likeThe Big Bang Theory.
Denis Villeneuve was also ‘traumatized’ by The Empire Strikes Back
Denis Villeneuvehas also talked abouthis love for Star Wars films, focusing on how theyinfluenced himas a young child and also traumatized him as well. He said:
I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with ‘Star Wars’. I mean, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is the movie that I anticipated the most in my life. I saw the movie a billion times onscreen. I was traumatized by ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’ I adore ‘Star Wars.’

The Empire Strikes Backstill remains the pinnacle of everything that Star Wars strives to be, something that modern entries into the show have failed to leverage. However, Denis Villeneuve, despite not being keen on teaming up with Lucasfilm, has found a space opera to make his own withDune, which has managed to create a brilliant franchise, leading Hollywood into the future.
