There are moreDungeons & Dragonsvideo games on the way, but developer Giant Skull’s upcoming title won’t attempt to follow in the footsteps ofBaldur’s Gate 3, instead aiming to be its own thing.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has the potential to go down as being thebiggest game of the decade, considering the sheer amount of awards it won and the rabid fanbase it attracted, who are still talking about the game two years after it launched.

The success of Baldur’s Gate 3 prompted Wizards of the Coast to start seeking out teams to make more D&D games. One of these is Giant Skull, a studio formed in 2023 by Stig Asmussen, known for his work on theGod of WarandStar Wars Jedigames. In an interview withThe Game Business, the topic ofthis upcoming D&D gamewas brought up in relation to its connection to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Giant Skull’s D&D Game Isn’t Pretending To Be Baldur’s Gate 4
Wizards of the Coast President John Hight spoke about how the D&D game isn’t going to be following Larian Studio’s efforts.
“Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game, and of course, we’re going to do a successor. This is not the successor to that game. We go to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring D&D to a very broad audience. Ideally, the game will appeal to D&D players because it will help them realise their imagination. But it’s also going to hopefully appeal to people that love playing action games, that love the Jedi games, that love God of War games."

It makes sense for a team associated with action games to go for that approach with its D&D title. The question is whether that’s what fans want to play? One of the reasonsBaldur’s Gate 3 was so successfulis that it emulated the tabletop game closely, both in terms of gameplay and spirit.
D&D action games have been done before to middling success, and while thelicense has been strengthenedfollowing the response to Baldur’s Gate 3, it might not be enough to make it an instant sales success.
