2024 has been the year of nostalgia, with Hugh Jackman in the Wolverine costume, Glen Powell chasing tornadoes, and our favorite Ghostbusters suiting up again. The trend continues with a take on the comic book characterThe Crow.Thirty years after Brandon Lee made the character iconic on the big screen,Bill Skarsgardattempts to deliver his own spin on the character inThe Crow.

The Crow’s Bill Skarsgård Sets Internet Ablaze, Hints Return to Another Iconic Role

The CrowReview

Before we jump in, my movie reviews aren’t based on comparing films to the source material or previous iterations of the film. I walk into every movie I see with the hopes that it will be good, and whether it is or isn’t is solely based on what is presented on the screen.

The first time Eric and Shelly lock eyes is inside a rehab center, where both are running from their past. Shelly is a rule breaker, as we see her sit with Eric (women aren’t supposed to sit with men) and later even go into his room. Shortly after her arrival, the woman trying to track her down shows up at the rehab center, leading Eric and Shelly to go on the run.

It’s crazy how this has an absolutely abysmal script, yet the imperfections of the script are hidden in the chemistry of Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs. Without these two, this film falls flat on its face without hesitation. From the moment these two locked eyes, you went on this Bonnie and Clyde-like ride and never looked back.

Skarsgard, covered in blood for most of this film, plays Eric to perfection. A slow build sees a somewhat quiet and reserved guy break out of his shell because of his love of Shelly. Once that switch is flipped, Skarsgard takes over this film with pure dominance and never looks back. He is consistently one of the best working actors and shows that even with this bad script, he can take a film and make it his own. His counterpart, FKA Twigs was an absolute delight in this. I need her in more movies.

Speaking of blood, when it kicks into full gear in the middle of the second and heading into the third act, we see some of the most ruthless kills you will see all year. I loved Rupert Sanders’s creativity and how he created many unique kills. I also appreciated how messy the fight sequences were with Eric. He isn’t a trained fighter or used to being put in these scenarios, so the uncharacteristic kills made it even better.

I have got to talk about the horrendous sound mixing. The unevenness of the sound throughout the film almost takes you out of it. There are times when you can barely hear the words coming from Skarsgard’s mouth, and it is frustrating. I also didn’t think the fight sequences were given the proper justice because of it. It’s a glaring issue that takes away from the overall movie.

Is The Crow worth watching?

If you plan on seeingThe Crow, go into it with the mindset that it’s a reimagining of the story and not a remake because otherwise, your judgment will be clouded. The Crowis an imperfect, perfect love story with the sweet taste of revenge. This film does just enough to stand on its own while bringing some pieces from the original to honor those before it.

The Crow is in theaters now.
