href=“https://www.dualshockers.com/tag/pokemon/">Pokemon game is which starter to choose. Traditionally, players get an option between a Fire, Water, and Grass-type Pokémon – though there is much more that goes into the decision-making process thanjust the starter’s type.

Players should take all factors into account when choosing the best Pokémon to adventure with. They will, after all, be at the trainer’s side for countless hours and endless battles. There are a lot of strong opinions within the Pokémon community

Updated by CJ Kuzdal on August 22, 2025: With the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet came the addition of three new starter Pokemon. Since they were not around when this list was first created, we’ve updated the article to include them.

10Hiusi Region (Honorary Mention) - Oshawott

While the Hisui Region of Pokémon Legends: Arceus didn’t necessarily debut in its own Region and technically takes place in an ancient Sinnoh, it is vastly different from the previous iterations of this locale and deserves its own spot on the list.

Of the three regional variants,Oshawott(which evolves into the majestic Hisuian Samurott), is the best choice. This Pokémon gains a Dark-typing alongside its normal Water-type, giving it a great list of resistances and advantages over many of the Noble Pokémon players will face in the first half of the game.

9Paldea Region (Generation 9) - Quaxly

All three of the starters inPokemon Scarlet and Violetare viable, but there is a clear winner when it comes to the best choice. Fuecoco is a fan-favorite and is a very close second, butQuaxlyis just slightly ahead in the long run.

Quaxly has a great move pool and can set players up for an easy time in the early game, but the Pokemon really shines when it reaches its final evolution, Quaqaval. Quaqaval adopts Fighting-type and with the Water/Fighting combo, the Pokemon will have a whopping seven strengths. Pairing these strengths with some powerful moves and you’ve got a Pokemon that can be taken all the way to the Elite Four with ease.

Pokemon-Generation-Eight-Grookey-Sobble-Scorbunny

8Galar Region (Generation 8) - Scorbunny

Scorbunnyis undeniably the best choice for Galar starter Pokémon. This Fire-type bunny has a fantastic speed and attack stat and can pack a real punch in combat. Its effectiveness against Gym Leaders in Pokémon Sword and Shield is hit-and-miss, but the other starters aren’t much better in that aspect.

Sobble puts up real competition here, and Grookey can be a huge help during the early portion of the game, but Scorbunny is the best long-term choice.

Pokemon-Generation-Seven-Popplio-Litten-Rowlet

7Alola Region (Generation 7) - Popplio

When it comes to the best starter in Generation 7’s Alola Region,Popplioholds an unarguable lead on the other two starters. Popplio is a great starter that thankfully doesn’t turn into an unsettling humanoid creature like the other two. In actual practice, Popplio – and specifically its final evolution Primarina – has a great set of resistances and very few weaknesses.

This is extremely handy in battle and gives players an edge over their opponents. Popplio makes quick work of most of the Island Kahunas and Grand Trials throughout the game. As it evolves down its line, Popplio will gain an additional Fairy-typing as well, which can be very useful in battles against notoriously powerful Dragon-type Pokémon.

6Kalos Region (Generation 6) - Froakie

Froakieis one of the best starters in the entire series, so it’s the clear choice out of the three Kalos Pokémon. Froakie evolves into Greninja, a notoriously capable Pokémon in battle. Its usefulness in the battle against the Elite Four cannot be overlooked.

Chesnaut and Delphox are both decent choices, but they fall flat in battle. Delphox is promising with its type-advantages but can’t compete with Greninja in the long-run. Chesnaut is just a pretty underwhelming Pokémon.

5Unova Region (Generation 5) - Oshawott

The best starter in the Fifth Generation’s Unova Region is a bit harder to take a definitive stance on. Snivy is unfortunately outpaced by its two cohorts, but when it’s down to Tepig or Oshawott, the line is a bit more blurry. Overall,Oshawottstands to be the better Pokémon in the long run. Tepig is a great choice and has some powerful moves in its arsenal, but it can fall short when it counts.

Tepig is a nice choice to take on many of the Gym Leaders in the game, but in the battle against the Elite Four, it struggles to hold its own. This is where Samurott, Oshawott’s evolution, really shines. It can handle many of the Elite Four Pokémon thrown its way and is usually the safer bet between the two starters.

4Sinnoh Region (Generation 4) - Chimchar

The Sinnoh Region of Generation Four is one of the more well-balanced sets of starter Pokémon.Chimchar(Fire-type), Turtwig (Grass-type), and Piplup (Water-type) all have their ups and downs, but Chimchar takes the cake by a slim margin. Turtwig is a nice option and can really be a great attacker that soaks up damage. Piplup is also good and eventually gains a nice Water and Steel-dual typing that brings it a long list of resistances.

Both of these Pokémon lack in other areas, however, and Chimchar is the safest bet out of the three. Chimchar is pretty good against most of the Gym Leaders in the Sinnoh Region and stands definitively above the other two when it comes to the Elite Four.

3Hoenn Region (Generation 3) - Mudkip

Mudkipis not only the best starter in the Hoenn Region, but it’s also one of thebest-designed Pokémonin the series. This Generation has the most impressive set of starters, so it is difficult to make choice. All the starters are solid, but Mudkip leads the charges slightly.

Mudkip has more advantages in Gym battles and can be a real thorn in the side of many opponents in the games where it is present. There isn’t a poor choice here, so any of these three starters will do great.

2Johto Region (Generation 2) - Cyndaquil

Choosing a starter in Generation Two’s Johto Region is one of the easiest decisions to make. Totodile can hold its own well enough, but Chikorita is a disaster competitively. This leavesCyndaquilas the clear choice for players aiming to have the best starter.

Cyndaquil, and subsequently Typhlosion, do well against most gyms and is a solid competitor when it comes to the Elite Four as well. Cyndaquil seems to get the most love out of the three when it comes to fan reception, so there’s really no downside to this starter.

1Kanto Region (Generation 1) - Bulbasaur

Choosing the best starter from the original Generation can be controversial. The clear fan-favorite is Charmander, as it evolves into Charizard – one of the most recognizable Pokémon in the franchise. While Charmander is well-liked, it is not necessarily the best choice when picking a companion.

Bulbasauris the best option when taking on the first Generation gym leaders. The Pokémon can compete pretty consistently throughout the game, and even though Charizard may outpace it in later Generations, Bulbasaur is the best choice in the franchise’s debut game.
