Matt Riddle shared on Insight withChris Van Vlietthat the aforementioned controversial promo was pre-planned, with both wrestlers wanting to elevate their storyline beyond just a typical wrestling match. Riddle suggested the idea of Rollins calling him a “deadbeat dad,” acknowledging that it would shock everyone.
“So they paired us up together, but we didn’t want to be just two good wrestlers just wrestling. We wanted to make this good. And Seth doesn’t want anything to just be short-lived. Seth knows how talented I was as well. So that’s what we were trying to do. And we were talking about talking trash. I was like, ‘Well, honestly, what you should say to me, because I know everybody’s jaws will drop, you should just call me a deadbeat dad! That’s why your wife left you, took your kids,’ I suggested it.”
The revelation that it was Matt Riddle’s idea to make the feud personal added an interesting layer to the storyline. The decision to incorporate real-life elements into their feud definitely added a much-needed edge, making their eventual bout at Extreme Rules more memorable.

Seth Rollins took a jab at Matt Riddle’s real-life divorce during the aforementioned interview. The Monday Night Messiah made a shocking statement, claiming,“Your wife divorced you, took your kids, and they don’t want to see your b**** a** anymore.”This level of realism in the promo left many fans stunned for good reason.
