While fans are waiting for George RR Martin to announce that he’s finally finished his long-overdue novelThe Winds of Winter, the author admitted that he is currently busy with other projects not related to the world ofGame of Thrones.

He’s had quite a hectic schedule for the past months after revealing he’s also dealing with numerous television projects which took most of his time, which could have been used in sitting down and typing away the last chapters in his upcoming sixth novel. It seems like Martin is giving more attention to his other endeavors than his book.

Renowned fantasy authorGeorge RR Martinhas been working onThe Winds of Winterfor over a decade now, and it seems like he would need a few more years to finish it by the looks of his timetable. He’sfully booked with several projects, including producing self-financed short movies to honor his late friend.

Howard Waldrop was also a writer, although he was not able to reach the same commercial success as Martin. They met in the 1960s when the latter was looking for a specific comic book:The Brave and the Bold #28. He found and bought Waldrop’s copy, and they soon became friends for life. Recalling his vintage copy, he toldThe Hollywood Reporter, “That comic book is probably worth $10,000 today.”
To pay respect to his late friend, who died of a stroke early this year, Martin decided to produce short films based on Waldrop’s literary works. The Ugly Chickensis a half-hour film written by Michael Cassutt, directed by Mark Raso, and produced by Martin himself.

What’s more interesting about this venture is that the author broke the cardinal rule of Hollywood. He used his own paycheque to finance the project, three of which were finished and two are in post-production.

While this is a nice gesture to pay homage to a beloved friend, it also means he’s puttingThe Winds of Winterin the side. Martin previously admitted he wasn’t able to write as many chapters as he wanted because of his jam-packed schedule, and it seems like he’s hardly made any progress since his last update.

In the same interview, Martin acknowledged that he might never completeThe Winds of Winter. “[They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know,” he told the outlet. In fact, he’s aware that people are already “writing obituaries” for him, and with that, he won’t be able to deliver the last two novels.
The last installment in the book series,A Dance with Dragons, was released in 2011. For now, fans can only hope that the author will find time to focus on his novel amid his busy schedule.
