Street Fighter 6’s Akuma Design Showcases The Warrior’s Evolution
Discussing all things Akuma in anexclusive interviewwith Game Informer, Street Fighter 6 director, Takayuki Nakayama, was asked about the process involved in updating the warrior’s design for a modern entry. The importance of visually representing the character’s aesthetic and evolution in this title to please loyal fans of the franchise was noted.
Nakayama discussed Akuma’s previous design, which included predominantly red hair with some white running through it. The director mentioned this was a “great way to express that even a character like Akuma is aging and has reached a higher level of mastery.”

However, to represent the warrior’s transition to becoming “older and more powerful” and what his life path looked like, Nakayama highlighted a “more Ashura or Buddhist statue-like design” was decided upon for him to “be a fighter with the intimidating presence of a beast while transcending human existence.”
Akuma was previously noted as an unbalanced character being a powerhouse warrior, therefore, Nakayama was asked how that challenge was addressed. “…players will need to be skilled with him to achieve consistent results…we have decided to balance him by giving him many powerful techniques, while setting his vitality on the lower end.” Players will no doubt enjoy the strategic challenge when deploying the character’s arsenal of moves against opponants.

Lastly, Nakayama was asked how ideas are shaping up for the Year 2 roster, but the director was careful not to lean into specifics. “…I think you will find there to be some unexpected characters,” is the kind of statement to get the hype levels set for Street Fighter 6’s second wave of exciting characters.
Keep an eye out for Akuma’s Street Fighter 6 debut on June 01, 2025.
