Steven Spielberg helmed a number of classic and blockbuster movies, and yet, fans are not aware that he also envisioned a tool that would help aspiring filmmakers in the form of a video game. Yes, and if that was not weird enough, the veteran director also hired Quentin Tarantino to star in it.

Released in 1996,Steven Spielberg’s Director’s Chair, designed by Knowledge Adventure, promised a very unique idea as the simulation game allowed players to learn how to make movies, including editing clips and designing posters.

Steven Spielberg And Quentin Tarantino Collaborated In A Bizarre Video Game Project
Steven Spielberg’s Director’s Chairwas an ambitious task where players would step into the role of an aspiring Hollywood filmmaker and helm their own movie by curating and editing system-generated clips.
In a behind-the-scenes interview viaYouTube, the director wished that the video game would help budding artists discover their passion for moviemaking.

“I hope aspiring directors gain from this tool, use like a test, to see how interested they are really in making movies. This is a bit akin to when I began with 8mm. The difference is I could go off and write the script from scratch and make my visual choices from scratch in this kind of film school in a box. We provide a lot of choices already, prefabricated, but then you get to mix and match and create a movie out of all the different parts.”

One of the provided clips starredQuentin TarantinoandJennifer Aniston. The player has the option to name the film according to their liking, and it would center around a death row inmate sentenced to the electric chair after he was falsely accused of killing an old woman.
While the entire prospect of the game was very much a novel idea during the ‘90s, it simply had limited technology to fully explore its extent. It was not entirely about making your own film but rearranging clips and editing the duration of the movie.

Nonetheless, the intention and concept were there. The video game project was not a massive success and this is absolutely why a lot of hardcore fans did not even know this existed.

Quentin Tarantino LovedSteven Spielberg’s Director’s Chair
While fans might find it bizarre thatSteven Spielbergchose to cast a renowned filmmaker for such a strange role, Quentin Tarantino deems it fascinating and ingenious. He said in an interview viaYouTube:
“In acting in this interactive project, one of the things I realized is that while I was going over the script and getting prepared, I actually have an opportunity that I don’t know anybody who’s ever had this opportunity before. While you’re acting, you’re doing two completely different sides of two completely different movies all at the same time. We do the scene, and we do it real, and we do it serious and play for dramatic effect.”
ThePulp Fictiondirector called the project a “crazy wild comedy” because he had to move back and forth between his two tasks for the entire day. Nonetheless, Tarantino found the video game helpful for kids who want to dive into the world of filmmaking someday.
