Starfieldplayers are urgingBethesdato add mechs to the game, with many baffled by the fact that these giant machines aren’t already usable.
In anend-of-year update, Bethesda said it had heard fan feedback loud and clear and would be adding “new ways to travel” in a future update. The developer didn’t disclose exactly what they meant by that, but given that one of the community’s biggest complaints surrounding Starfield is the slow traversal on planets, many believe it could be some form of land vehicle.

Starfield Players Are Using Xenogrubs And Corpses For Extra Storage
Why add extra storage to your ship when you can just use a Xenogrub?
Executive Producer Todd Howard has, however, gone on record in the past toexplain why Starfield didn’t launch with any land vehicles. “Once you do vehicles it does change the gameplay,” Howard said. He went on to explain that it’s also about how fast players are seeing things, as the game was designed around players being on foot whenever they’re not in space.

So does that rule out mechs being added to the game? Players certainly hope not.
Starfield Fans Really Want Bethesda To Add Mechs
Over on the Starfield subreddit, aposthas garnered over 1,300 upvotes after questioning whether or not it would really be that difficult for Bethesda to add mechs into Starfield?
In Starfield lore, mechs are “leftovers from the Colony Wars,” Bethesda’s lead designer Emil Pagliarulo explained (viaPCGamer). While bothThe Freestar Collectiveand theUnited Colonieshad mechs during the war, they were eventually “outlawed with the Armistice that ended the Colony War.” So all of those badass-looking mechs you keep seeing? Yeah, they’re just to look cool.

Some players believe that it’s “silly” for mechs to not be utilized. “I get mechs are banned but I find it silly that other ‘bad’ factions don’t use them,” one user said. Another user echoed the same sentiment, saying, “The whole ‘they’re banned’ thing is stupid. Many things are banned, but that doesn’t stop people from doing them.”
Others pointed out that mechs are mentioned multiple times throughout the game, which makes it feel “really weird” that they are not actually utilized. “You literally fight a mech captain. In a mech facility. And he doesn’t use a mech…” one player said.

Fellow Starfield players also noted that there are even mech repair sites scattered around the galaxy, further entwining these giant machines into the game’s lore.
“I don’t know why BGS felt the need to include mechs as a big piece of the lore and then throw out the lamest reason for why they aren’t used. Like, how is a mech such a terrifying weapon? It’s just a tank with legs,” a fellow Starfield player said.

While Bethesda will be adding new ways to travel in the future, we don’t expect it to come in the form of mechs. Given how committed Bethesda is to Starfield’s lore, it would be surprising to see them pull a complete u-turn. But who knows? Do you think we could see mechs finally become usable in Starfield?
