In the entertainment industry, especially in the anime world, the voice actors are going to be playing a huge cast of characters when they are active. After an actor gets a role, they can put their heart and soul into it and even define the character in ways that the creator wouldn’t have thought of.

But all of this comes after being selected. Voice actors or actors in general are often warned against becoming too emotionally invested in a role before securing it.
Spy x Familyvoice actress Natalie Van Sistine was an amateur actor who made this classic mistake while auditioning for Yor Forger, putting herself at a major risk of disappointment and heartbreak.

The risky audition that paid off
Given Van Sistine’s relative inexperience with major roles and proper series experience led her to believe that she had a better shot at voicing a supporting character, rather than a part of the main cast like Yor. This was a realistic and admirable perspective, knowing one’s own abilities properly.
In an interview with Otaku USA, Van Sistine said this about her audition as Yor-

I sent that audition in and I had a moment where I was like, “Ohh no, I got really attached to this character while preparing for this audition. I really put a lot of myself into it and I’m going to have to mentally let go of that.” That was very hard. I spent the whole weekend trying to distract myself and not think about it. I finally got the call a couple days later and they’re like, “Hey, the director wants to cast you. You have the part.” I just couldn’t believe it; it just seemed like I’ve been in a fever dream ever since.
However, she didn’t take the audition for Yor lightly. She went the extra mile and did her best tounderstand the enigma that is Yor.

She did this by reading the first volume of theSpy x Familymanga to get a proper feel for both Yor’s deadly assassin side andher awkward, anxiety-ridden civilian side.
A dangerous game: Getting too attached too soon
This preparation helped her deliver an audition that stood out and endeared her to the directors. But the more she worked on it, the more emotionally connected she got with the character, and in her own words, this was a dangerous thing to do.
Actors must love and live the character that they are playing, but they must, more importantly, understand that rejections are part of the process. It is being able to move on from a character that takes experience, wisdom, and resilience.

Van Sistine may have taken a huge risk by getting attached to Yor, but in the end, her hard work and preparation allowed her to bring Yor Forger to life inSpy x Family.
