Sonic Frontiers, the latest mainline entry in theSonicfranchise, launched earlier this week and recently reached over 19,000 concurrent players on Steam, which is a new record for the entire series, based on the data provided bySteamDB(courtesy ofVGC).

Before Frontiers, Sonic Mania was holding the record for the franchise on Steam with over 11,000 concurrent players. Delivering an open-world experience, Sonic Frontiers is a pretty unique iteration in the franchise, which makes it stand out from previous titles and retro Sonic games. This huge change in gameplay elements already has its supporters and critics, which is the reason why the game’s Metacritic score sits around 72. That being said, the game has received “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam, with over 95% of the reviews suggesting the game is a worthy experience.

It’s worth noting that Sonic Colors has not been launched on Steam yet as it was an Epic Games Store exclusive, but even if we had the data for it, the game would probably still stand behind Sonic Frontiers.

Recently, the director behind Sonic Frontiers claimed that the new title is like a global playtesting session to determine the future of the Sonic franchise. As Frontiers becomes a huge turning point in Sonic’s history, the feedback from players and media could either encourage the developers to continue the new path or blame them for distancing from the origins.

That being said, the current reaction from the fans does seem promising for more open-world Sonic adventures in the future. The game director mentioned that they will keep player feedback in priority for the next Sonic titles.

Even ifSegacontinues the new approach in the Sonic franchise, it is still unlikely that the Japanese publisher completely turns its back to old-school 2D Sonic experiences. So, we can probably;y expect to see both new and retro-style Sonic games in the future from Sega.

DualShockers' Dean James rated Sonic Frontiers 8 out of 10, praising the game’s open-world approach and character writing. You can read the full review via thislink.
