In the world ofStar Wars, very few entries have been as iconic asSkeleton Crew, withAndorbeing a fair enough exception. If anything, the recent television additions to the space opera saga have earned nothing short of some really disappointing reviews from many, withThe Acolytearguably being the perfect example of the same.

But the currently ongoing coming-of-age adventure series seems to be bringing a positive change after the debacle that was left behind by the 2024 series. To say the least, by proudly breaking one of Disney’s most frustrating trends with George Lucas’ sci-fi/fantasy franchise,Skeleton Crewis pretty much serving as the franchise’s savior.
Skeleton Crewbreaking Disney’s trend is working inStar Wars‘ favor
Star Wars: Skeleton Crewhas been gaining quite a bit of fan attentionas of late, and the reasons behind it are all too understandable. To say the least, the introduction of some really great characters and bringing about thatGooniesfeel into the incredible mystery box storytelling has all worked out in the television show’s favor.
Yet, one element surpasses all the others in making the show pretty much one of the finest additions to the soap opera lore to date: the show is unique with a one-of-a-kind format and plot. To be more clear, Disney allowed this particular series to be a distinctive project – one that didn’t bank on nostalgia, and this very feature seems to have paid dividends.

As fans have been witnessing for years, the films often serve as an exercise in nostalgia as they take ideas and scenes from otherStar Warsprojects, putting them on screen with new characters in familiar spots. Just the way Disney did withThe Force Awakens, which might have been their way to make their money back as quickly as possible after buying Lucasfilm.
It May Not Be the End for Johnny Depp: Star Wars ‘Skeleton Crew’ Episode 6 Drops Pirates of the Caribbean Easter Egg
However, while all the projects of the last nearly-decade-and-a-half have been filled with callbacks to the original trilogy and the prequels,Skeleton Crewdecided to trek down a different road. With minimal to no callbacks, the show perfectly succeeded in feeling like aStar Warsone, with not even the technology, characters, and locales being copied from previous projects.
For one, while there was the part of Jod Na Nawood using the Force and getting a lightsaber that might be called out for being a callback, pretty much no other callbacks were there. As compared to its predecessors, no galaxy-shaking battles between good and evil were present, nor were there any stormtroopers, desert planets, or Padawan veterans of the Clone Wars.

Instead, the core plotline itself reminds of what madeGeorge Lucas‘ space opera so famous in the first place: A familiar story, a group of children embarking on an adventure in the greater world, some really, really interesting characters, and some commendably intriguing mysteries, all unfolding most immaculately captivatingly in an organic way.
That being said, this exclusiveJude Lawstarrer really stood different and held that incredibly creative and immersive flair to it, reminding fans that it was a part of theSWuniverse without really bringing back those nostalgic elements that gave it a feeling of being copied from the previous pieces. This way, the series even righted the wrongs done by the preceding installments.

Skeleton Crewis righting the wrongs afterThe Acolytedebacle
BeforeThe Acolytehit the screens, there was a lot of buzz surrounding it about just how epic it was going to be, especially since it was going to deal with the High Republic Jedi battling the Sith a century before the sequels. But when it hit the screens, all the hype surrounding it died down, and it didn’t take long for the show to get an 18% approval from fans onRotten Tomatoes.
Thanks to this,Skeleton Crewhad nothing short of an uphill battle in front of it. Additionally, when the series first dropped its trailer, some people from the fandom decried it for its lawns and suburbia, as those weren’t reallyStar Wars. Because of all of this, the series even didn’t get to have those many viewers’ hours, especially less thanThe Acolyte.

Skeleton Crew’s Highest-Rated Episode Yet Has a Fantastic Marvel Connection, Its a Good Sign For an Upcoming MCU Film
Because of this debacle brought about by theAmandla Stenbergstarrer, the newer coming-of-age story didn’t really witness fans having all those high expectations with it either. But it most certainly appears to have outperformed itself, considering its 91% critical and 80% general audience score onRotten Tomatoes, after which it might as well be deemed the franchise’s savior.
The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew can currently be streamed on Disney+.
