The second season of theApple TV+streaming seriesSiloproves one undeniable truth — this Rebecca Ferguson-led show is the best science fiction adventure series sinceLost! A suspenseful, layered masterwork,Silopresents world-building at its finest.

With a stellar cast besides Ferguson, which includes Tim Robbins, Common, and Harriet Walter, this Graham Yost’s (Justified) dystopian drama, based on the novel series by Hugh Howey, uses its science fiction trappings as a backdrop to study our humanity. The second season ofSilois constantly surprising, gripping, and simply riveting from start to finish!

Apple TV+’sSiloSeason 2 Review and Synopsis
The last time we checked in on the good people ofSilo, lead engineer Juliette Nichols (Ferguson) left her home to “clean” but had plans all along to head over the hill that outlines the crater where the Silo sits. It’s at this point that multiple people have died before reaching the point of no return.
When Juliette does, she reveals the horrific truth—they have not been lied to! She sees dozens of craters, all Silos, in a desolate land, with an abandoned city in the background. As Juliette makes her way, she comes across thousands of skeletons sprawled across the earth, looking as if they rushed out from another door, but from what?

As Juliette enters, the nearly identical building that goes hundreds of levels down and holds up to 10,000 people is empty, except for one man, “Solo” (Wildcat’sSteve Zahn), the “IT-shadow,” like the Japanese soldier stuck on an island in the Pacific who believes World War II is still going on. Solo has not left his post in decades.

Apple TV+’sSilois the Best Science Fiction Adventure Series SinceLost!
The second season might as well be called “How to Start an Uprising” because it adds nuance to the story of how one person’s actions can spin a movement out of control. Each action has a butterfly-effect reaction with various shades of moral ambiguity, making it thrilling. This season is an exhilarating sci-fi adventure that deepens its themes.
Showrunner Graham Yost continues to tell a complete, engrossing story you can easily get lost in. The experience is unique, although the concept seems to have been borrowed fromEntourage’sBilly Walsh’s adaptation ofLost in the Clouds, which is wholly immersive and layers in history, conflict, and politics that are far from superficial, skillfully avoiding needless exposition.

The performances are outstanding, includingFerguson’sportrayal of Juliette, which brings vulnerability and determination few can match on the small screen. She single-handedly carried the first season, but possibly due to scheduling, she is apart from the rest of the cast this season. Still, her scenes with Zahn demonstrate internal struggles that feel authentic and relatable.

Is Apple TV+’sSiloSeason 2Worth Watching?
However,Tim Robbins, who plays Bernard, is terrific here, easily playing one of the most complex and evil villains since Michael Emerson’s Ben Linus/Henry Gale in that J.J. Abrahams’s series I mentioned above. While you may never agree with Bernard’s methods, his character brings up interesting questions of authority, moral ambiguity, and the greater good.
There are very few flaws in the season, and it’s hard to give Silo a higher recommendation since they did not screen the season finale. I do wish there had been more effort to tie in Ferguson’s Juliette’s backstory with flashbacks. While I think Zahn is tailor-made for this role, easily his best performance since Rescue Dawn, there is not a lot of surprise in his turn, which basically comes down to Steve Zahn doing Steve Zahn things.

Still, the second season ofSilois the type of mainstream science fiction that network television used to do best. This brutal, gritty, post-apocalyptic populist series that they don’t make anymore. Fans ofSnowpiecerandThe Matrixwill loveSilobecause of the authentic use of themes such as control, free will, identity, self-discovery, and rebellion are told with a fresh perspective and in a new way where you have no idea where the story may be going next.
