Ryan Gosling’s time in Greta Gerwig’sBarbiewill certainly go down in history as one of cinema’s most culturally significant characters. In a film full of beautifully written commentary and some of the finest Hollywood had to offer, he became the center of attention, despite being just Ken. Playing the most inconsequential toy of all time, the actor gave a performance and a depth that very few blonde dolls have managed to get. This has led to him receiving immense respect and acclaim, from all directions, inside and outside the industry.

One would expect that the same for those close to him, however, this does not seem to be the case. It was revealed by Gosling that his daughters have not watched the film, even though it is the biggest project of their father’s career. This reason for the same may not be what many expect.

Ryan Gosling Does Not Want His Daughters To WatchBarbie

Greta Gerwig’sBarbieis a four-quadrant movie, catering to audiences of every type. Despite this, there is one demographic of people that resonated the most with the film; young women. With many getting extremely emotional with all that the script was trying to say and all that it left to the viewers’ interpretation, it is safe to say that everyone involved in the film did what they sought to do. This is why it is extremely surprising to find out thatRyan Goslingdoes not want his daughters to watch it. He gave an interview withE!Newswhere he explained his reasoning for this drastic and potentially controversial decision and his answers are quite comedic.

“I don’t know if you should watch your father as Ken. I don’t know what age is a good age to see your father do that. It gets pretty crazy,”he explained,“They’ve seen little parts of it and they came to set one day when I did a big musical number.”

He also that though they had not seen the movie, they did visit him on set during the shoot of one of the most important moments in the film, Ken’s musical number.

Ryan Gosling’s Daughters Were The Reason Why He DidBarbie

What Ryan Gosling said after this only adds to the irony of this situation. He revealed that his daughters, Esmerelda and Amada, were the reason why he took this film in the first place. He stated that when they would go to the store, they would beg for the actor and his wife, Eva Mendes, to let them get Barbie dolls. After deciding that this was an appropriate enough age for them to get these toys, he mentioned that they never asked for Ken dolls, which is extremely fitting.

“I knew that they loved it because they kept saying at first, ‘Hey, can we go to Target?'” he recalled. “And we go to Target, and then they’d slowly go by the Barbie aisle. And my wife and I sort of realized, ‘OK, I think it’s time to let them have Barbies.’ And no interest in Ken, which was pretty interesting, too.”he went on that he feels that makingBarbie“was a way to sort of make something both for and with them.”
