The Officehas arguably been one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, effortlessly amusing fans with its never-ending meme content and captivating humorous elements. But as much as the show left viewers in stitches, turns out that shooting it wasn’t all that enjoyable for the actors – especially when it comes to the fan-favorite Rainn Wilson.

As surprising as it all may seem, the truth is that Wilson, who iconically brought Dwight Schrute to life, actually had a really hard time working on the respective sitcom as he lived some really ‘unhappy’ days on the series. And, if that wasn’t enough, working alongside masterminds Steve Carell and John Krasinski seems to have made it all worse for the actor back then.

Rainn Wilson didn’t have the best of times working onThe Office

Throughout the 201 episodes spread across nine seasons made and released over the course of eight years,Rainn Wilsonperfectly brought to life one of the most beloved characters inThe Officeand the assistant to the Regional Manager, Dwight Schrute. But as much as he made viewers laugh through his performances, the actor, on the inside, was having a battle with himself.

This is because, for a long time while he was working on the sitcom, he couldn’t shake the feeling that all that he was doing just ‘wasn’t enough’ for him. If anything, these constant feelings of him expecting a lot more from himself – like becoming a movie star – had him become ‘unhappy’ with it all and unable to enjoy it the way he should have had.

Appearing on theClub Random with Bill Maherpodcast,The Rockeractor confessed the same, saying:

When I was in The Office, I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough. This is what I’m looking at now, and I’m realizing now — I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money, working with Steve Carell and Jenna Fisher and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig. I’m on one of the great TV shows. People love it. And I wasn’t enjoying it.

As it turns out, working alongside other hit stars likeSteve CarellandJohn Krasinski, who also had their respective careers going skyrocketing with this series, further made matters worse for the already unhappy Wilson.

Further looking back in retrospect and highlighting how he felt back then, the 58-year-old went on to say, “I was thinking about, Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell? How come I can’t have a movie career? Why don’t I have this development deal?” All of these feelings fostered inevitably ruined Wilson’s time on the show.

How Rainn Wilson eventually got out of his desire for those materialistic ambitions

Continuing during the same interviewRainn Wilson further went on to emphasize that, while he was working onThe Office, he was “clutching and grasping at [things like] making hundreds of thousands — I wanted millions.” Even though he had already cemented himself as a TV star, he wanted to go further and become a movie star, as he pointed out, “It was never enough.”

“Humans have lived for hundreds of thousands of years, and ‘never enough’ has helped us as a species […] But [nowadays] this ‘never enough’ impulse is ripping us apart,” saidThe Megstar in all honesty. Of course, as right as he was, Wilson also admitted that instead of being this way, he should have taken the laughter as a remedy, adding how honored he was to work on the show.

According toOutKick, he reportedly continued to tell the podcast host, Bill Maher, “When I signed up for ‘The Office,’ it’s like, I want to buy a house, Bill Maher, I want to buy a house…I wasn’t thinking about giving laughter as a therapeutic remedy and a balm and a salve to a hurting populace. What an honor it was to be a part of something like that.”

Eventually, though, it was his taking lessons from Buddhism that helped him get out of his never-ending desires for all materialistic ambitions. As Rainn Wilson confessed during the same interview, working on his spirituality and taking the said lessons ultimately helped him become more grateful for all that he had in the present and let go of materialistic ambitions.

The Office can currently be streamed on Netflix.
