If you’re aPUBGplayer still using either a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One, I’m afraid I have some bad news for you. Publisher Krafton, which hasn’t exactly won itself many fans recentlyover its Subnautica 2 debacle, could be set to cause further reputational damage by ending support for one of its most popular titles.

Although the vast majority of the game’s players are on PC, there are still a large number of console players. However, services are set to be discontinued on older consoles on November 13th, with the game instead being relaunched on current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

A Necessary Transition?

In anofficial announcement via their website, PUBG Studios revealed that the transition “is a necessary step toward aligning PUBG Console with current-gen consoles”, though little sympathy was spared for its loyal and long-term console players.

“To provide our players with a more stable gameplay environment on console and ensure a smoother, more seamless experience with future updates, we’ve decided to transition to current-gen consoles.” The statement continues,“As part of this transition, we will be ending support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.”

The statement then goes on to boast of improved specs on current-gen consoles, such as improved framerates and visuals. This will offer little consolation to players who may now be forced to buy entirely new consoles to continue playing one of their favorite games.

The discontinuation of support for PUBG is just the latest in a lengthy list of industry-wide service withdrawals. Marvel Avengers was famously discontinued after just three years, while EA recently announced that it would beshutting down servers for sci-fi MMO Anthem in early 2026.

A recent interview with Krafton’s Executive Director/CFO Dongkeun Bae also revealed that the company islooking to pursue a Fortnite model of the game as a ‘platform’.

While the decision undoubtedly stems from a cost-benefit analysis that deems the service no longer viable, it is yet another kick in the teeth for players who will feel that they are no longer cared for by the developers they have supported.

We can only hope that PUBG Studios will deliver on their promises of an improved service for current-gen consoles, but it seems that the best bet nowadays is to play on a PC.
