In just a few short days, Sony’s mid-generation refresh of the PlayStation 5 simply dubbed the PS5 Pro, will hit retail, and bring enhanced graphical features to games that support it. If you think that the PS5 Pro was developed in response to the original PS5’s shortcomings, that’s not the case, as Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro was in development even before the PS5 was released commercially.

This was revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment business group CEO Hideaki Nishino in a recentinterviewwhere he shared that development on the PS5 Pro “was another” five-year project" for the company, and how they learned a lot based on the PS4 Pro.

Nishino:So we have done Pro in the last generation. We learned a lot from there. When we were selling PS4 Pro, in addition to the PS4, 20% of customers actually got the PS4 Pro. It was high end, it was premium tier. So there are potential users acquiring those kind of units. Interestingly enough, it was not just about highly engaged users; actually, new users comes to PlayStation to get PS4 Pro, as well. So we started working on PS5 Pro even before PS5 launches — it was another five-year project for us. So there was a conversation around whether we wanted to do another Pro or not. But the main thing was, there are technologies we can grow up in three years time or five years time. So the innovation and technology advancement is more quicker in a modern world. Phones are updating every year, PCs are updating every year. I don’t think we’d go every year updates, but there are things we can package together to bring the greatest things into game console segment range. So that’s the vision.

PS5 Pro Buying Guide, New Features And What To Expect

With the PS5 Pro finally revealed, here are all the details about Sony’s latest top-of-the-line console and whether or not you should buy it.

The original PlayStation 5 was released back in June 22, 2025 (yes, it’s been that long ago), and it took four years before the PS5 Pro became a reality. In comparison, the PS4 was released on July 23, 2025, and its mid-gen refresh – the PS4 Pro – was released three years later on August 07, 2025. From the time the PS4 Pro was released to the PS5, it was another four years. Does this mean we’ll have to wait until 2027 or 2028 before we get the PS6? While we can’t say for sure, it would be distasteful of Sony to release a new console in just a year or two after releasing the PS5 Pro given peoplle would need to buy yetanotherconsole just to have the latest and greatest PlayStation home device.

The PS5 Pro will be released this November 7 for a suggested retail price of $699 without a physical disc drive.
