PlayStation Plusmembers looking forward to a new horror experience can now try out one classic game from the PS1 days for free if they’re a member of PS Extra or Premium.

Sony’s latest unannounced addition is from a long-running horror franchise that genre fans have a lot of respect for, given its heritage.

PS1 Horror Classic Now Available For PlayStation Plus Members

The title quietly made available by Sony is the 1996 horror classic Alone in the Dark 2 (thanksPush Square!). This is made by Infogrames, and has no connection to the various franchise reboots the series has seen throughout the decades.

There was an Alone in the Dark reboot in the form of Alin the Dark: The New Nightmare released in 2001 on consoles which was developed by Darkworks. While that version was well received critically, I gather it didn’t sell enough to warrant a sequel as the franchise remained dormant for seven years before we got another reboot 2008 titled Alone in the Dark. This was developed by Eden Games for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, and received mixed reviews from critics. The latest reboot was from Pieces Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, and was released last year, again titled, Alone in the Dark. This one reimagined the 1992 classic into something more akin to Resident Evil, and even starred Hollywood star David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) as protagonist Edward Carnby.

ps1 games that aged best

Unfortunately, the latest reboot failed to sizzle at retail, thoughit was reviewed decently enough.

As for the PS1 classic, it received generally positive reviews way back when it was released, though I would imagine some of its gameplay mechanics and controls would feel a little dated nowadays.

10 PS1 Games That Have Aged Best

PS1 heavy-hitters that have survived the test of time.

While Alone in the Dark 2 might not look like much, horror fans might be pleasantly surprised by it. PS1 games didn’t have the luxury of today’s modern games where tension-building can be done primarily by graphics alone. This means developers were more creative in inciting horror and fear among gamers, which players can now test out for free on the subscription service.
