One Piecebegins with a chaotic start and introduces us to the dynamic between a 7-year-old Monkey D. Luffy and a younger Red-Haired Shanks. Their relationship is one of the most memorable and important ones as it sets off a series of events in theOne Pieceworld. We wouldn’t have the Straw Hat Pirates and the powerful man Luffy is today, making the World Government shake in their boots, if Shanks hadn’t met Luffy and also stolen the Gomu Gomu no Mi.
Fans have long theorized that Shanks meeting Luffy was a calculated move that benefitted the older man. We all are led to believe that Luffy eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi was just a mere accident caused by his insatiable appetite. However, some fans are convinced this is all part of Shanks’ plan to get the One Piece once and for all. On top of that, due to recent developments with Gear 5 being awakened, people are questioning if the Red-Haired Emperor knew of its existence too.
Was Shanks Manipulating Luffy the Entire Time?
The acts exhibited by Shanks towards Luffy were courageous and incredibly protective. Fromsaving Luffy from a Sea Kingto giving the young boy his Straw Hat that originally belonged to Gol D. Roger, Shanks is incredibly biased and sweet towards him. However, someOne Piecefans found this behaviour suspicious after the subsequent revelations of the true nature of the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Turns out the World Government was hiding the real power and Luffy is now the next Joy Boy. So, why was Shanks carrying such a powerful Devil Fruit?

There are several theories surrounding his true intentions. If Shanks knew, why would he keep the Devil Fruit so unguarded and near the boy who is nearly always hungry? Maybe Joy Boy’s awakening was down to one person and was needed for finding One Piece, then Shanks was targeting Luffy the entire time. There are hints that Shanks knows more than he lets on. He evenmeets the Five Elderswithout any trouble. So, it’s not outlandish to think he knew Luffy could be the next Joy Boy and manipulated him the whole time.
Is Shanks Hiding His True Power?
It’s clear thatEiichiro Odaisn’t showing us the true extent of Shanks’ power and even says the more we see him, the closer we are toOne Piece‘s ending. Shanks is clearly one of the most powerful and important characters in the series, despite his low screen time. The Emperor doesn’t even have a Devil Fruit but is feared throughout the seas.

He even stopped Kaidou once and his appearance at Marineford stopped the war. This leads many fans to believe he gave the Gomu Gomu no Mi to Luffy to give the young boy a fair fight for the One Piece.

Let’s say it’s true that Shanks wanted Luffy to become the next Pirate King and gave him the Devil Fruit to give the Straw Hat Captain the edge in the fight. Still, why would he purposefully make his opponent more powerful? It’s more likely the key to finding the One Piece is linked to awakening Joy Boy and only Luffy could do it. It’s only up to Oda to reveal what Shanks is up to.
