AlthoughOne Piecehas several forms of portraying power in the characters, Eiichiro Oda hasn’t forgotten what the series is really about. It is a show about pirates and he isn’t afraid to show the ruthlessness of what it takes to survive in the vast ocean.

So who is the best example of this inOne Piece? It’s none other than Kaido of the Beasts, who is also the Strongest Creature in the World. The former Emperor is by far the most terrifying and brutal villain in the series, easily defeating anyone in his path in the Wano Arc.
His legacy came tumbling down with Monkey D. Luffy’s rebellion against his rule. However, defeating him wasn’t easy for the young Emperor. It took him multiple tries and dying to unlock the power he needed. The point of the Wano Arc inOne Piecewas to show how ruthless a real pirate can be.

Gear 5 wasn’t created to discredit Kaido’s power
Eiichiro Odahas foreshadowed Kaido’s raw power all the way back in the Post-Enies Lobby Arc by Monkey D. Garp. His being an Emperor is enough of a testament to his strength. His first physical appearance was strange, to say the least, but he landed from a sky island without a single scratch.
“No one fights Kaido without taking damage”: Shanks May Have Been Vindicated, but One Piece Is Yet to Prove His Biggest Feat
So for years, we knew this beast would face off against Luffy at some point. We just didn’t know the true extent of his abilities, along with his ruthlessness compared to other villains ofOne Piece.
If Luffy had defeated Kaido in just one (long) round, it wouldn’t have been worth the hype. The Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance needed to be formed just for one Emperor’s crew. It shows the extent of Kaido’s strength and in the Wano Arc, we saw his ruthlessness.

This just goes to show thatLuffy couldn’t have defeated the former Emperorone-on-one in classic Shonen style. It took an alliance to tire him down and even then, it wasn’t enough. The point of his battle against Kaido wasn’t to show off anyone’s strength, however. This Reddit fan puts it perfectly.
One Pieceis a lore-heavy story. Gear 5 is rooted in the history of its world, not just a random power given to Luffy. Without it, he possibly would have died. However, unlocking this progressed the story and gave liberation to Wano. It also proved the lengths the alliance had to go to for their freedom.

Kaido is still a fantastic villain inOne Piece
Despite his defeat, the former Emperor remains in our mindswhen going into the Elbaph Arc. Loki might outmatch him but Kaido will always remain iconic for his eccentricities and the fight he gave Luffy.
His physical introduction inOne Piecewas highly unexpected, amusing, and yet depressing. Since he was undefeatable, his only wish was to die. Even so, he had incredible will and leadership. Nobody without it would take over such a grand country like Wano.

One Piece: The Only Proof That Kaido Isn’t Dead Might Be Oda’s True Genius With His Zoan Devil Fruit Explanation
Let’s also not forget the harm he did to Luffy. He’s the only person who has been able to humble him that severely and unlock his Devil Fruit’s awakening. He’s become an integral part of the storyline and an unforgettable antagonist.
One Pieceis available on Crunchyroll.
