The Boyshas been entertaining and shocking audiences with its audacious and bold storytelling with its first season in 2019. Unlike Marvel and DC, Amazon gave Eric Kripke free rein to show some outrageous gory visuals while also making some creative political satire. Irrespective of all these, the characters and the narrative are also intriguing and carry the show.

Homelander and Billy Butcher have come a long way from the first season and are now more connected than ever due to Ryan, Becca’s son, who shares Homelander’s powers. At the end of season 3, Butcher is given six months to live as he suffers the repercussions of injecting Temp V. Season 4 saw his condition worsen which has led to fans speculating an interesting theory.
The BoysSeason 4 May be Pulling Off A ‘Fight Club’Move With Billy Butcher’s Hallucinations
The Boysseason 4 kicked off its three-episode premiere recently and continued the eponymous team’s efforts to bring down Homelander and save the world from a catastrophic future. By the end of season 3 Antony Starr’s Homelander andKarl Urban‘s Billy Butcher have Ryan in common, and season 4 continues to explore that dynamic.
Season 4also explores the consequences of Butcher’s excessive intake of Temp V last season. Along with the reveal that he is terminally ill and has only 6 months to live, Butcher is seen mumbling and having hallucinations. When Mother’s Milk and other members ofThe Boysask him who he’s talking to, he dismisses and it’s revealed there’s no one there while he’s speaking.

“This was Claudia’s real reaction”: Eric Kripke Confirms 1 Disgusting Scene from The Boys Was Totally Real That Nearly Made Claudia Doumit Break Character
While Becca does appear in one of his hallucinations (making her an anchor of his hallucinations), fans know she’s already dead. Thus, it’s safe to assume that Butcher frequently hallucinates, believing he is talking to someone on the side. This has led fans to compare Butcher’s condition toFight ClubstarringEdward Nortonand Brad Pitt
Inthe film. the deteriorating mental state of Norton’s character leads him to hallucinate Pitt’s character who is essentially a heightened (desirable) version of himself. Fans are starting to believe that Butcher was talking to himself during his conversations with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character, and Morgan’s character is a projection of himself. Here are some of the reactions onX,

Now that would be a plot twist. Once he finally gets Ryan to the CIA safehouse he asks Butcher “Who are you talking to? There’s nobody there.”

He is, you notice right at the start. When MM asked him who he was talking to and no one was there.

Well they already said that this character is probably getting a spin off but they could be just to throw us off

Good theory. Hadn’t thought of that. we haven’t seen anyone else interact with him yet

“I don’t think I’ve ever laughed this much on Reddit before”: Homelander’s Reddit AMA Leaves The Boys Fans in Hysterics That Just Might Surpass Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool
This is indeed an interesting theory and is reasonable because Morgan’s character has never interacted with anyone (so far) else except Butcher. With Butcher’s deteriorating physical and mental state (evidenced by the scary veins running down his skull), it is all plausible for now and it remains to be seen if the theory holds up as new episodes continue to drop weekly.
Bringing Back Becca In Season 4 ofThe BoysWas a Conscious Decision By Eric Kripke
Shantel VanSanten’s Becca wasBilly Butcher‘s love interest in the first two seasons ofThe Boys. She was the person keeping Butcher grounded and showing that there is good in the world and something to live for. However, she is accidentally killed by Ryan’s lasers in an effort to kill Stormfront at the end of season 2.
“He has done more for The Boys than the actual Boys themselves”: One Supe Deserves His Redemption Arc in Season 4 for What He Has Done for the Heroes That’s Hard to Ignore
However much to everyone’s surprise. Becca returns in season 4 in one of Butcher’s hallucinations (she serves as his conscience) as he tells him to do what is right about Ryan and to bring him back. Amidst, Butcher’s inner turmoil about not living up to his wife’s promise and Homelander being in the way of Ryan, this hallucination serves as the perfect conflict within Butcher according to Eric Kripke. He toldTVLine,
He’s only got six months to live. He needs to decide, is he going to fulfill his promise to Becca, or is he going to give into all of his worst impulses? So we thought to really dramatize that promise that he made, to sort of bring her back as sort of the angel on his shoulder that he’s conflicted by, was a good way to show his inner turmoil.
It remains to be seen what Butcher does in order to convince Ryan to come back to his side so that he can help him take down Homelander once and for all, before he dies.
The first three episodes ofThe Boysseason 4 are now available on Prime Video, with the remaining 5 episodes dropping weekly.
