It has been twenty-four years and people are still talking about Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s messy divorce. They were the ‘it couple’ of the ‘90s, getting married six months after they met on the sets of Cruise’s racing filmDays of Thunder. After starring in the controversialEyes Wide Shut, the couple divorced in 2001.
The divorce came as a shock to fans and provided fodder for the media, who intensely scrutinized the proceeding. From Cruise’s Scientology connections to infidelity, various theories were speculated by fans, despite the couple not giving any reason. Talking about the media’s reaction to the divorce, Kidman spoke about one regret she had at the time.

However, in 2001, the couple announced that they were getting a divorce. Kidman’s career was already taking a backseat in light of her marriage with Cruise, who was one of thebiggest stars in Hollywoodat the time. The divorce led to many speculations from the media about the cause of the divorce. Neither of the two have commented on the reason yet.
Kidman, however, later reflected on the media hullabaloo that had occurred during such an intense time in her life. Sadly, she also seemed to take responsibility for it and said (viaHarper’s Bazaar),
I was young. I think I offered it up? Maybe I’ve gotten a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible. I just prefer to live in the world that way. I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time, I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach.
The Australian actress also mentioned that when her current husband Keith Urban asked her how her heart was, she replied it was open.

Despite the huge amount of drama surrounding her divorce, Kidman mentioned that it ultimately led to her getting some of the best material to perform and she even won the Oscar after it. She said (viaThe Telegraph),
I was running from my life at that time, I wasn’t able to handle the reality of it and as an actor, you have this wonderful thing where you can go and get lost in somebody else’s life. Out of my divorce came work that was applauded so that was an interesting thing for me. That culminated in winning an Oscar and that caused an epiphany which was, ‘This isn’t the answer’.
However, she also mentioned that she felt extremely lonely while holding the golden statue on the stage and realized that drowning in work was not the answer.
