Nexus Modsis rolling out an update - and this time, it’s for something so staggeringly unpopular that subverting it has becomea bit of a meme.

You know it, you hate it, it’s ID verification for adult content! That’s right - where once you could just go to a website, get an account, and change its permissions to suit your taste, the UK government has decided it’s time for a change of pace.

You’ll need to prove your age with a government ID to access adult content on Nexus Mods. Are there any risks to giving out your ID on the internet? Nexus Mods (or more specifically, the service Nexus Mods is using to comply with UK law) pinky-promises that there’s none.

Are people trusting this promise? Nope. And that’s where The Discourse begins. “If they think they getting my ID,“one userwrites, “they can screw off. I’m not giving them my ID because let’s face it, Data Breaches happen all the time.”

“As a UK-based company,” says Nexus Mods in anupdate post, “we’re legally required to protect children online and ensure adult content is only accessible to adults. Removing adult content entirely was never a viable option, so we’re introducing an age verification system that will allow adults to continue accessing it while meeting our legal obligations.”

Nexus Mods is using a third-party service called k-ID for age verification. It is, at the very least, a one-and-done sort of deal - if you’ve already passed through k-ID’s gates, you may not need to do it again, regardless of website. “Once verified, your status is recognized across Nexus Mods and other services that use k-ID, so you don’t need to repeat the process.”

Nexus has specified that this change, so far, only affects users from the UK. Those in the EU as a whole are next in line if/when their governments follow in the UK’s footsteps.

Some UK Nexus Mods Users Won’t Need To Verify Their Age

Despite the government breathing down the website’s neck, not all accounts on Nexus Mods will need to check in with k-ID. And if you’re enough of an internet geezer to know exactly how much of Your Base Are Belong To Us, that might just be you.

The exception is stated simply and without complication, both on Nexus' update post and on theage-verification FAQ: “If your account is 10 years or older, you will be exempt from this check.”

If you’ve beenmodding Skyrimsince the release ofSkyrim, your continued Skyrim-modding adventures will go unhindered. But a decade is a long time; not all users can be so lucky. Odds are, you’ll still have to deal with k-ID for the time being.
