After four seasons ofNCIS, which initially started as aJAGspin-off, veteran showrunner Donald Bellisario was shown the exit, and per reports, his departure was a result of his feud with Mark Harmon. Harmon, who has been a regular onNCISsince its inception and has now marked his return in its new prequel, apparently wasn’t a fan of Bellisario’s antics.
According to insiders, theFreaky Fridaystar was reportedly frustrated by the producer’s management style, and it seems, the showrunner himself wasn’t too eager to continue his run on the show after four seasons.
The Network Reportedly Asked Donald Bellisario To Leave After Mark Harmon Feud
According toTV Guide, the alleged feud between Donald Bellisario andMark Harmonhit the fan after the lead star became very frustrated over the showrunner’s“chaotic management style”. The report read:
Mark’s been working every single day, 16 hours a day. Don tries to micro-manage everything. Script pages get faxed to the set at the last minute, and Mark is tired of dealing with the huge impact that makes on his life.
Elaborating on it, executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson later expressed that Bellisario’s way of doing things was hard on everyone,adding“It was a very complicated show in the beginning”.

While he clarified that Harmon never explicitly told anyone to“Get rid of Don.”, even though the experience was very hard on him, the network eventually stepped in and asked the showrunner to“work from a distance”.
Eventually, the network went to Bellisario and said, ‘Maybe you should work from a distance from it and not be quite as involved in terms of the way you work.’ And so Bellisario, by the fifth year, was gone.
While the producer kept the title of executive producer, he had no involvement in the show after the season 4 finale, and as for Harmon, he has been involved with the IP ever since.

Although it seems the network decision worked out in the end, given the longevity of the show, later addressing his departure, showrunner Donald Bellisario expressed that it was his decision to move on fromNCIS. The producer further added that he wanted to do something else, stressing“He had done enough on the show”.
It was just time for me to move on and do something else. I had done enough on the show, so I stepped away. It was my decision.
On the flip side, despite parting ways withNCISback in 2021, Harmon has returned for its prequel,NCIS: Origins, which follows his character’s backstory.
