Aside from the budding romance between Miyo and Kiyoka, this new season is expected to introduce and explore many new characters into the series’ premise. However, anime-only viewers should brace themselves for a potential heartbreak as the opening sequence of this season portrays two characters whose love story would be etched on our hearts forever.

The opening theme ofMy Happy Marriageteases a heart-wrenching love story between the two characters; Naoshi Usui and Sumi Usuba, that delves deep into their complex pasts. For fans already familiar with Miyo’s struggles, this revelation will further showcase how her lineage is marked by both extraordinary gifts and unimaginable hardships.
The opening theme ofMy Happy Marriage: A glimpse into the past
The54-second mark of the openingofMy Happy Marriageseason 2briefly displayed imagery of two children running towards a cherry blossom tree. While anime-only viewers have been confused as to who these new characters are, manga readers have recognized them immediately. Those two children were Sumi Usuba AKA Sumi Saimori; Miyo’s biological mother and Naoshi Usui; Sumi’s cousin and the eldest son of the Usui family; one of the Usuba branch families.
Despite being part of such a prestigious lineage, Naoshi’s childhood was anything but exemplary. As for his personality, Naoshi was notorious for his violent and cruel behavior. Unprovoked, he would harm other children and animals, leaving adults around him helpless. His unchecked temper and the awakening of a potent Gift; one that allowed him to manipulate the five senses, made him nearly impossible to control.

The Usuba family viewed his Gift as a possible threat, even if it was a unique asset in a time when such skills were very rare. They considered sealing Naoshi’s Gift because they were afraid of the mayhem he may cause. But before this harsh measure could be implemented, a glimmer of hope appeared in the form of Sumi; a happy and kind girl who would alter Naoshi’s life forever.
Sumi, the daughter of the head of the Usuba family, was disciplined, kind, and, nurturing — everything that Naoshi was not. Sumi approached Naoshi fearlessly despite his notorious reputation, offering him support and company. Her constant encouragement gradually tamed his violent impulses and helped him use his feelings in a healthy way.

Naoshi and Sumi: A promising future cut short
As the manga ofMy Happy Marriagehas displayed, both Naoshi and Sumi’s relationship blossomed into love as they grew older. However, their dreams were shattered when the Emperor interfered. As Sumi was gifted with Telepathic abilities, fearing the potential of a child born with Dream-Sight; a Gift surpassing his own Divine Revelation, the Emperor orchestrated events to ensure Sumi would never marry Naoshi.
Thus, the Emperor’s schemes led to the downfall of the Usuba family’s trading business, forcing Sumi into an unwanted marriage with the Saimori family. Despite Naoshi’s pleas and promises to find another way, Sumi sacrificed her happiness to protect her family, leaving Naoshi heartbroken and disillusioned, which ultimately led to the emergence of his violent nature and his departure from the Usuba family.

However, fate reunited him with Sumi in another form in the manga; through Miyo. He eventually learned about Sumi’s death which led him to fall into despair, however, through Miyo, his determination reignited. He vowed to build a better world for her and others who had suffered under the existing regime inMy Happy Marriage.
