Masashi Kishimoto is probably responsible for one of the most brilliant mangas of the century withNaruto. However, the mangaka has revealed some brilliant inspiration that he had for the iconic Tailed Beasts that were at the center of the narrative of his manga.

During his visit to France, the mangaka spoke with La Nouvelle Republique, where he revealed that the inspiration for the enormous-tailed beasts actually came from somewhere closer to home. As the artist/writer revealed, he had always been very taken with monsters, and the one key inspiration that he had for the Tailed Beasts, was none other than Godzilla himself.
Masashi Kishimoto always wanted to draw monsters
Masashi Kishimoto revealed toLa Nouvelle Republiquethat his inspiration for the Tailed Beasts, arguably one of the most important concepts in the story ofNaruto, was inspired by Japan’s most influential monster, Godzilla. He also revealed that he loved monsters from a very early age, which is visible in the character design that he renders for various characters in his manga. He said:
I’ve been passionate about Godzilla since I was in elementary. My dream was to draw monsters, so I ended up including some in my story. I like Godzilla, I like Mothra, I like Ghidorah, and I also like Rodan. They inspired me to make the Tailed Beasts in Naruto.

Narutohas some of the most influential concepts of modern Shonen Manga, some of which can be seen echoed in the likes ofJujutsu Kaisen,Chainsaw Man, and of course, inBoruto. The concept of the Tailed Beasts and the magic inherent to them was able to create a system of power that Kishimoto was able to leverage expertly, along with all the other moving parts, to more often than not, deliver some of the greatest action sequences in the genre.
The Tailed Beasts are not the only concept that Godzilla inspired inNaruto
Back in 2014, when the original run ofNarutocame to an end, the creator talked toNipponabout the influence that Godzilla had on his work. He revealed:
I loved Godzilla. I just wanted to draw a monster-something big that I could place in a battle. That’s why I decided to introduce the Summoning Jutsu, the summoning skills that let ninja call forth the weapons they need, or call a creature to their side to aid them in a fight. My intent from the start was to bring forth gigantic beings with these skills.

Summoning Jutsus also has a major role in the fights that end up happening towards pivotal moments in the story. Introducing gigantic characters in a fight scene is exactly whatMashashi Kishimotoenjoyed, and it seems to have been a skill that he has honed over a long time because it definitely paid off inNaruto‘s action and magic system.
