Loki, the God of Mischief, has been one of Marvel’s most interesting and complex characters, as he has razor-sharp wit and a multi-faceted persona that viewers adore. But despite all the accolades and praise for the talented Tom Hiddleston, there’s something deeply lacking in the Disney+ show’s narrative.
It has largely skipped one of the most important parts, i.e., his identity as a Frost Giant. So, let’s look at how big of a missed opportunity this is and how fans have already come up with their own explanations.
Loki’s backstory and Marvel’s missed opportunity
There is a painful truth that lies at the heart ofLoki’sidentity. He was born as the biological son of Laufey, the King of Frost Giants, and abandoned shortly after birth. The God of Mischief was left to die, but Odin adopted him and raised him as an Asgardian prince, alongside Thor.
So, his true heritage was hidden from him for years, and learning about it would eventually shake his entire perception of the world, and possibly, his whole existence. In the 2011Thormovie, the filmmakers do give us a glimpse of his Frost Giants origins, but it’s not nearly enough.

Moreover, the series just never fully explores how Loki’s heritage might have affected his psyche, and how it shaped him as an individual and Asgardian. If they decided to showcase his internal conflict, it would turn out to be a goldmine for the character.

Not exploring his emotional turmoil leaves a significant gap in our understanding of the character. Viewers don’t know what made him so complex, tormented, and ultimately sympathetic. But a compellingReddit commentprovides insight into how Loki’s Frost Giant heritage could have influenced his behavior.
The comment theorizes that Loki was aware of his differences throughout life, even in his Asgardian form. So, he likely felt strange and isolated throughout his life. The beings around him also treated the young one as an outsider, and perhaps that is where he developed the ability to use humor and mischief.
