An interview with the developers of the upcomingMario Kart Worldhas revealed that the game nearly broke one of the series’ longest-running conventions, one that would likely have raised eyebrows if it had come to pass.

TheNintendo Switchhas access to nearly everyMario Kartgame, thanks toretro titles on Nintendo Switch Online. The only ones missing are Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and the arcade games, with the former likely to appear as part of the GameCube roster on Nintendo Switch 2.

Retro titles aside, Nintendo has only released a single Mario Kart game per console, starting with the SNES. An interview with the people behind Mario Kart World on the officialNintendowebsite has confirmed that this pattern was nearly broken, as the game was originally planned to launch on the Nintendo Switch.

Mario Kart World Almost Launched On The Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch already had a Mario Kart game, inMario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was a souped-up version of the Wii U’s entry in the series, with a ton of extra content thrown in, especially when the Booster Pass added lots of new stages.

The idea was for Mario Kart World tobe a second entryon the Nintendo Switch. However, the developers couldn’t get all of their ideas to work on the hardware, such as featuring 24 players in the same race.

“When we were developing for the Nintendo Switch system, it was difficult for us to incorporate everything we wanted, so we were always conscious of what we were giving up in return. We discussed things like toning down the visuals, lowering the resolution, and we even considered dropping the frame rate to 30 fps in some cases. It was a tough situation.”

TheDLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxeis what gave them the breathing room to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2, which has stronger hardware and could bring the team’s ambitions to life.

Mario Kart World Direct Dry Bones Flying

It’s strange to think that the Switch could have been the first console withtwo Mario Kart releases, which proves that Nintendo isn’t adverse to the idea. Perhaps the Switch 2 will receive a second Mario Kart game further down the line?

Mario Kart World Not Worth The Price Tag According To Fans

Mario Kart World’s dedicated Nintendo Direct has been met with scorn by fans, mostly due to its highly inflated price tag compared to the new content.
