Joaquin Phoenix has made quite the name for himself in the superhero scene withJoker. With the sequel for the film in theatres, it is worth taking a look at how the project amalgamated multiple ideas, including how theHeralum wanted to do a character study with the villains of the DC universe.

As he revealed to Collider, Joaquin Phoenix had a lot on his mind when initially he was fiddling with the concept, wanting to pick out a villain to do a character study with. However, initially, the actor ruled out Joker as a potential villain with whom he could work.

The actor thought that The Joker was not in the cards for him

Colliderreported thatJoaquin Phoenixwas very keen on working with one of the villains that DC had to offer. However, that could not be the Joker, given that Phoenix was not very sure about how that would pan out. He said:

I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done’. So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said, ‘I’ll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros’. And I said, ‘I’m not gonna go, I can’t go to a general meeting. So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character’. I felt like you could get something onscreen.

Joker witnesses the rise of an ultradark villain

Joker, by Todd Phillips, starring Joaquin Phoenix, would go on to be one of best R-rated films to come out of Hollywood, briefly stealing the crown fromDeadpoolfor an R-rated film with the most box office collection. The film essentially took the same approach to storytelling that Sony’s Universe of Spider-Man characters has. However, instead of turning the villain into a hero, it keeps its antagonistic roots intact.

Will there be a thirdJokerfilm?

Joaquin Pheonix and Lady Gaga are set to enamour fans with their breathtaking musical sequel, but it remains to be seen if the franchise will have room for a third film. While the second film introduced the fan-favorite Harley Quinn, there might not be enough material in the franchise for a third film without the likes of Batman or Gotham’s other villains, such as Harvey Dent, who makes his debut in the sequel.

5 Reasons Why Joker: Folie à Deux Is Already a Box Office Flop

While the third film could introduce another villain from Batman’s mythos as an installment to the fracnhise, there might be a way to continue Harley Quinn’s story from the second film into a third film. While a trilogy of films could be great, a strong duology could also be enough to satisfy fans if it is done right.

Joker:Folie à Deuxis currently in theatres.
