Despite the commercial success ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it failed to impress the critics and one of their biggest concerns was the portrayal of Lex Luthor, who was supposed to be the calm yet intimidating villain. Jesse Eisenberg played him the opposite way, and his performance did not click with the viewers.

The actor wasn’t initially aware of the backlash on his acting skills, but he said that the poor reception of his role placed a dent in his career. Simply put, it means that no one would want to hire him anymore.
Jesse Eisenberg skipped press forBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Playing such an iconic role as Lex Luthor would have the entire world looking at him, butJesse Eisenbergrevealed that he was not encouraged by Warner Bros to do press interviews. In his conversation withBusiness Insider, he said it’s only for the main protagonists:
I was told that the Mexican premiere would be “heroes only,” which is a euphemism for, “There’s not enough room on the plane to have the bad guy.”

True or not, this is quite odd since many fans would have also wanted to know more about his character. It’s a legacy role, which means there had been actors who wore its shoes in the past, and Eisenberg would have to offer a different take to set himself apart.
While he’s fine not attending press tours, he expressed love for the role. He enjoyed doing it and was totally oblivious to the fact that critics hatedZack Snyder’s movie.

TheNow You See Mestar confessed that thepoor reception to his performanceaffected him personally and professionally (viaArmchair Expertpodcast): “I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public.”
What Did Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot and Jesse Eisenberg Say About Zack Snyder’s “Failure” Justice League?
His version of Lex Luthor was quite far from being comic-accurate, and this did not sit well with fans. However, it is unfair to put all the blame on the actor as he was only doing his job and probably portraying it the way the scriptwriter and director intended. Not doing press tours as well meant that he wasn’t able to connect with the audience and give them an inkling of what to expect from his character.
Jesse Eisenberg is still open to starring in a DC movie
Eisenberg admitted that he isn’t a comic book fan, but he felt very personal about the criticism thrown upon his performance. In an interview viaDeadline, he said that he and writerChris Terriothought hard about the character. He also had an acting coach who helped him channel Lex Luthor’s backstory.
Nicholas Hoult: ‘His ideology is perhaps better for humanity’ on Why His Lex Luthor is Already Better Than Jesse Eisenberg
He never envisioned playing such kind of role in his childhood, let alone a massive DC villain, but he was still happy just to have had the opportunity to star in a superhero film. He couldn’t care less about the genre, but he admitted to keeping his doors open if DC Studios wanted him back.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceis currently available to watch on Max.
