In what could be described as an act of linguistic bravado, the creators of Netflix’s surprise smash hit,Blood of Zeus, have declared victory and crowned the show a great success. Clearly ruling over Netflix withBlood of Zeus, it has become very crystal clear that the Parlapanides brothers have hit a treasure trove for epic storytelling, and we can’t help but wonder what other mythological gems they will uncover next in the series.

Amidst all of this, the creators, Charley and Vlas Parlapanides say they feel quite proud to have brought the ancient tales of Greek mythology into modern light while also throwing shade at Marvel and DC, two comic book giants. This certainly did light up some internet gossip among the fans.
Marvel & DC Are Nothing But Mordernized Greek Mythology!
From a very intriguinginterview, the comments from the creators may sound like a boastful call to war, but not entirely far from the truth. Marvel and DC have indeed copied much from these ancient mythologies, not least Greek tales, in creating some of their most iconic superheroes.
Characters like Thor—who, based on character portrayal, one can consider the counterpart of Zeus—or Wonder Woman, whose story bears a resemblance to the Amazonian warriors of Greek mythology—are examples. By saying this, the Parlapanides brothers toss shade at this grand storytelling heritage that has been watered down and rebranded for modern audiences, according to them.

Marvel and DC, truthfully, it’s just Greek mythology with costumes… We’re just taking it back.
“We’re just taking it back.” Vlas’ statement gives evidence of their desire to take back the authentic spirit of Greek mythology, straight and raw, untainted by modern interpretations. The success ofBlood of Zeusalone shows that the audience is ravenous for more authenticity, and the Parlapanides brothers are only too eager to oblige with such content. With vision and commitment to faithfulness like this, they are sure to revolutionize the experience of mythology in modern media.

It was now clear to Charley and Vlas Parlapanides that they needed to think out of the box if they wanted their vision noticed. The brothers realized that when they pitched a traditional take on Greek mythology, the eyes of executives glaze over, dismissing it as a tale too familiar. They thus came up with a clever framing for their story, as a “lost” tale—one that never had been told or transcribed before. This bold approach permitted them to break away from convention and tell the story they really wanted to tell.
Many of them were never transcribed,” Vlas reasons. “So we thought, maybe some were lost. The question we asked was, ‘What if this were one of those tales?’ That intrigued us. We could take the artistic liberty and tell the story we wanted to tell.

Brothers Parlapanides used the oral tradition of Greek mythology for inspiration, realizing that most stories had not been written down and hence had never actually been fixed into one version or another. It’s this realization that granted them license to create their own very original tale—true to the spirit of the original stories. Thus, by embracing this fluidity of oral tradition, they forged a captivating story with authenticity and imagination.

So to wrap it up,Blood of Zeussurely does stand apart with its very unapologetic, creative take on Greek mythology and its embracing of the classic tales in all their gory, godly, monstrous glory. When mythological stories have already found their way into almost every possible genre, this anime series gives them to people in the epics as they were—raw, unfiltered, and epic. In doing so, it breathes fresh life into rather familiar stories, returning them to an equally fresh feeling of excitement.
